Gannett has flagged the Breaking News Reporter - Freep.com job as unavailable. Let’s keep looking.

Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an experienced reporter to join our global autos team, working from Detroit.

The auto industry is undergoing an immense transformation with the rise of hybrids, EVs and other technologies that are making the car more like a computer on wheels.

Big U.S. car companies are trying to navigate this tricky and costly transition, while also protecting their profits and fending off new competition from upstarts and fast-growing auto manufacturers in China. This shift is creating upheaval at nearly every point in the car business – all of which is ripe for generating scoops and deep storytelling.

The ideal candidate will be curious, comfortable writing conversationally about highly technical subject matter and dogged in the pursuit of exclusives and ambitious enterprise. This is a diverse beat and we’re looking for someone who can fully embrace its potential, unearthing people-driven stories that extend from the factory floor to the C-suite.

This reporter will be a sharp writer who has an eye for detail and a track record of getting inside a company or organization. Candidates should have experience in business or financial reporting and high interest in corporate coverage.

This person will be a newshound who is capable of writing under tight deadlines and can alternate with ease between breaking news and longer-term projects. A desire to collaborate with colleagues in other coverage areas is a must. Knowledge of the auto industry is preferred but not necessary.

The position is based in Detroit, Mich., and reports to the WSJ Autos Editor.

You will:

  • Develop sources to break news and write authoritatively about your beat
  • Unearth distinct and impactful enterprise
  • Mine data and public documents for stories that might be hiding in plain sight
  • Collaborate with colleagues in different parts of the newsroom to elevate and broaden our coverage

You have:

  • Ideally, at least three years of reporting experience
  • A proven track record dominating a competitive beat
  • The ability to report and write clearly under deadline pressure
  • Experience tackling ambitious projects and balancing the various demands of a fast-paced newsroom
  • A desire to experiment with different storytelling formats, including video, audio and podcasts

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter detailing how you would do the job, and five examples of your best work.
