Job Overview

The Creative Director, Advertising & Editorial Copy plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the brand through innovative storytelling and creative excellence. Serving as both creator and guardian of Macy's brand voice, they lead the editorial strategy with a passion for pop culture and emerging trends, crafting persuasive narratives that resonate across all channels. They inspire and mentor a team of copywriters, ensuring the development of advertising and social campaigns that position Macy’s as a culturally relevant, inspirational brand with a clear purpose and focus on the customer. This role requires a proven track record in advertising copywriting and retail or fashion editorial experience. The Creative Director collaborates closely with strategy and other creative leaders within Marketing, building alignment and support among senior leadership and key stakeholders within Marketing, Merchandising, and Digital to ensure a superior brand experience.

What You Will Do

  • Establish brand voice standards and develop breakthrough communication strategies that align customer needs with marketing objectives and channel best practices.
  • Create a distinctive editorial point of view for Macy’s, leveraging customer insights, pop culture, and fashion trends to ensure content remains fresh.
  • Direct the conceptualization and execution of advertising and social copy, ensuring campaigns are clear, concise, on-brand, and highly competitive.
  • Provide constructive feedback to enhance the work and address the question, “Why Macy’s?” over any other customer choice.
  • Plan, prioritize, and produce a high volume of work, taking ownership of the synergy between copy and art direction from start to finish.
  • Generate innovative ideas that drive business results, persuasively selling creative concepts to key stakeholders and senior management.
  • Lead and inspire a team of copywriters, fostering a culture of creative excellence and innovation through coaching, cross-functional workshops, and compelling presentations.
  • Cultivate emerging talent, develop a leadership succession plan, and recruit high-performing creatives to meet evolving organizational needs.

Creative Direction: Skill in directing the conceptualization and execution of advertising and social copy, ensuring campaigns are clear, concise, on-brand, and highly competitive.

Project Management: Proficiency in planning, prioritizing, and producing a high volume of work, overseeing the synergy between copy and art direction from inception to completion.

Innovative Thinking: Ability to generate creative ideas that drive business results, effectively pitching concepts to key stakeholders and senior management.

Leadership and Mentorship: Skill in leading and inspiring a team of copywriters, fostering a culture of creativity and innovation through coaching and cross-functional collaboration.

Talent Development: Capability to nurture emerging talent, develop leadership potential, and recruit high-performing creatives to meet organizational needs.

Software Proficiency: Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite and proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel for effective communication and presentation.

Customer Focus: Seasoned strategic thinker with a keen focus on the customer, ensuring creative efforts resonate with the target audience.

Storytelling and Presentation: Excellent storytelling and presentation skills to effectively communicate creative concepts and strategies.

Adaptability: Ability to stay informed about industry trends and adapt learnings effectively to drive creative excellence.

Analytical Skills: Refined analytical skills and confident decision-making abilities to evaluate creative effectiveness and optimize strategies.

Who You Are

  • Dedicated to fulfilling ideals of diversity, inclusion, and respect that Macy’s aspires to achieve every day in every way.
  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • 12+ years of experience in advertising and fashion editorial copywriting. 7+ years of management experience with a proven track record of developing teams.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
