The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking a Sponsored Programs Training and Development Specialist to join the Department of Research and Development - Sponsored Programs Administration. Sponsored Program Administration office has a responsibility to inform and train University employees, both within the administrative units of UMB and within school departments, so that they are prepared to effectively administer and support sponsored research projects. 

The Training Specialist is responsible for research administration training and outreach directed at UMB employees and affiliates. The individual will coordinate the development and implementation of the learning curriculum to ensure that training is aligned with program goals and constituent needs and is responsible for monitoring and reporting the effectiveness of training for the employees. The coordinator is expected to have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures for adult instruction and research administration.

This position will require up to three (3) days in-person on campus per week.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Conduct continuing needs assessment and identify skills or knowledge gaps that need to be addressed in all areas of research administration. Manage a training advisory committee to prioritize training needs of the campus and make recommendations for how to meet those needs.
  • Map out training plans and designs to develop training and outreach programs that increase skills and decrease knowledge gaps. 
  • Recruit and train subject matter experts to serve as instructors. 
  • Evaluate training programs effectiveness and efficacy to instructional design. Report on the impact of training on employee skills and how it affects research administration on campus.
  • Assist instructors in the design and preparation of presentations, educational aids, and materials.
  • Assess instructional clarity, inclusion of interactive teaching methods, and fidelity to the learning objectives. Provide feedback from the assessment to instructors, coach instructors on methods for engaging participants, and train instructors on using new tools for instruction. 
  • Facilitate forums to provide opportunities for instructors to meet and share ideas to improve presentation skills, update materials, and provide a network for new instructors to gain experience and advice from their colleagues. Organize or provide train-the-trainer sessions for internal subject matter experts to improve instructional skills.
  • Develop and implement strategies to market training opportunities to employees and other appropriate audiences. Update SPA websites and establish a communication network with campus stakeholders to disseminate information about training opportunities.
  • Ensure the smooth and effective functioning of training events and special projects by managing schedules, room reservations and logistics, registrations, handouts, and attendance. Develop, promote, and monitor online quizzes and participant feedback surveys related to training. Maintain updated participant database and training records. May supervise a graduate student assisting with training activities. 
  • Assist SPA with initiatives that complement existing training programs offered by other campus units including Sponsored Projects Accounting & Compliance. Work with the current Director of Training and Policy and the Research Security Manager to develop and implement required research security and export control training.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Three (3) years of proven working experience coordinating multiple training events for a large organization.

Preferences: Master’s Degree preferred. Experience providing technical training in a university setting preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Extensive knowledge of instructional design theory and implementation.
  • Familiarity with traditional and modern training methods and techniques.
  • Adequate knowledge of learning management systems and web delivery tools.
  • Working knowledge of A/V and other equipment used for presentations.
  • Strong attention to detail, follow up, and excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize time-sensitive work and handle multiple assignments.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • MS Office proficiency.
  • Ability to complete full training cycle(s) (assess needs, plan, develop, coordinate, monitor and evaluate).

Hiring Range: $67,000 - $80,000 per year (Commensurate with education and experience)
