Duties and Responsibilities

The Human Rights Education and Training Unit is strengthening its work, particularly through new partnerships. The internship will particularly boost the Unit’s capacity to identify potential opportunities and partnerships in the area of human rights education. Under the overall supervision of the Coordinator of the Human Rights Education and Training Unit and the direct supervision of Unit staff, the intern will be responsible for the following tasks: a) Assist implementation of the dissemination strategy of the documentary Changemakers: Stories of Young Human Rights Educators and related resources; b) Assist coordination of the World Programme for Human Rights Education, especially its current fourth phase (2020-2024) focusing on youth; c) Assist development of OHCHR’s programme on human rights education in higher education; d) Assist resource mobilization efforts for human rights education and training activities; e) Research and liaise with relevant actors with regard to the use of arts for human rights education; f) Identify possible new partnerships with human rights education actors in both formal and non-formal contexts, with a focus on the Americas; g) Assist other human rights education and training activities of the Unit as required.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat Internship Programme, applicants must, at the time of application, be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master's degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. However, for this internship, experience in the area of human rights education is an asset. Good drafting and communication skills are required. Good knowledge of standard software applications, such as Microsoft Offices, is required. Ability to work in an international or culturally diverse environment is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language - Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish – is an asset.

Through this internship, the intern will get an exposure to human rights education and training programmes and activities at the United Nations level.
