Interested in learning how to make positive social change? Are you currently a graduate or undergraduate student working in social work, communications, journalism, political science, public administration, or gerontology? The AARP North Carolina Office is looking for an intern to strengthen communities and advocate for what matters most to families: health security, financial stability, and personal fulfillment. We'll challenge you to think and work innovatively on real-world projects. AARP is committed to your growth and cultivating your continued learning and development. This paid internship has an anticipated start date of Spring 2024 and will go through the end of the year.

Responsibilities

  • Research policy issues, draft documents to support advocacy efforts, participate in team meetings and strategy discussions, collaborate on communications tactics, and engage in a support role for various remote and in-person events
  • Enhance event participation by assisting with event marketing and promotion through social media and other platforms to tell the story about AARP North Carolina's work
  • Assist with drafting press releases, event advisories, editorials, and other material for internal and external channels
  • Enhance AARP North Carolina's social media presence, including daily monitoring and posting
  • Support advocacy and outreach by monitoring the news environment for issues, reports, and opportunities that can help advance AARP priorities
  • Research candidates, elected state officials, their positions, and their affiliations
  • Assist in planning, scripting, production, and editing social media videos and content
  • Design event/program fliers, graphics, and other material

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college/university, rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship, or must have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program
  • Preferred studies include social work, communications, marketing, journalism, gerontology, political science, policy, or related fields 
  • Must be a self-starter and adaptable, with the ability to work under tight deadlines 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, anticipate project needs, and discern work priorities
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations, including age, race, and sexual orientation
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office programs 
  • Familiarity with creating and editing videos and knowledge of multiple social media platforms is a plus

  • In office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories. 

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
