Postdoc Associate for Automated Tracking and AI Deep Learning Analytics

Kansas State University

About This Role:

Postdoc Associate for Automated Tracking and AI Deep Learning Analytics to Support Sorghum Impact on Pig Behavior and Immune Responses

The 1DATA-PAW initiative seeks applications for a postdoctoral scholar in the area of data science and elements of statistical and machine learning at K-State. We are looking for a researcher who can help design and engineer a novel deep learning technology that will use visual, audio, and other sensory data to track the behaviors of pigs in a pen continuously and in test arenas that are used to measure cognition and dominance. In light of this technology, the fellows will be requested to perform a comparative analysis at an adaptive resolution rate based on multiple cameras installed in the pens and arenas designed by Dr. Hulbert for the Sorghum Project. Sorghum fermented products and genome data will be used to mitigate stress, inflammatory, and behavioral responses in adult pigs using computer vision system that must have restricted feed intake to maintain a healthy body weight or reduce weight after becoming overweight.

The appointment is performed at K-State Olathe and K-State main campus in Manhattan; therefore, the successful applicant will be expected to travel to these research labs. We are looking for an independent researcher who will help conduct research using advanced statistical/mathematical tools to extract and cleanse data from different resources, build, and be an integral part of our 1DATA-PAW program. The incumbent to these positions would be responsible for the initial configuration and implementation of an API platform for continuous visual tracking of behaviors that will be collected using a camera system for our proprietary machine learning software (to be developed). The system could theoretically identify and count the number of potential contests or conflicts as well as distinguish play-like-behaviors. This is envisioned as a multipurpose platform that will integrate and analyze behaviors including distance, rotation, time spent drinking, near environmental enrichment, sleeping, and time spent in close proximity to pen mates using 1DATA tools (www.1DATA.life). This position is full-time, exempt (salaried), term position.

Why Join Us:

1DATA consortium and Precision Animal Welfare (PAW): The 1DATA-PAW initiative enables the use of large (incomplete or "messy") data that is available, but not in a format that is currently useful for translational research. The framework developed a clearinghouse for the collection and integration of multiple databases to develop the next generation of approaches from experimental and computational perspectives. Dr. Jaberi and Hulbert’s program currently supports 4 postdocs, 8 graduate students, 3 undergraduates/interns and 3 research associates. The team is leading international experts in creating pipelines for conventional and automated novel data curation for comparative data analytics. The team develops intelligent streamlining of a research-based data repository.
