With the advancement of large-scale data with different modalities and new technology, data science is becoming an integral part of R&D. It plays the important role of connecting data, insights generation with advanced methodology and the underlying scientific questions across many stages in R&D to enable data-driven decision making. This requires the development of relevant data strategy, the buildup of fit-for-purpose data platform and foundation, and applications of the most effective computational methods to address the key questions.

In this role, he/she will support data platforms build up in China and closely collaborate with ODSP global team and IT to ensure smooth adoptions of appropriate analytic tools and platforms. He/she will apply established technical skills and experience to deliver enterprise scale solutions to support the growing needs of data analytics and storage in translational medicine team. He/she will work with domain experts to bring solution architecture expertise to help design, develop and deliver models and tools that extract and generate insights that push forward the understanding of drug development. 

Major responsibilities

  • Engage with other data scientists to understand data sets availability and design appropriate databases to manage and support scientific applications’ localization, which include, but not limited to translational medicine analysis required data storage and analytics solutions. 
  • Lead the design of appropriate data architecture according to project requirements for data acquisition and security as well as stakeholder-defined deliverables.
  • Work as a liaison with external software vendors and internal IT personnel, and global ODSP team to design, develop and implement new integration, execute system development and maintenance activities to meet data science needs, also to assure software and data development projects are complete, accurate, and sustainable.
  • Support database administrators, network designers and IT personnel to create effective and secure methods for data backup and recovery needs in translational medicine.
  • Participate in our agile process delivering results and adapting to change on a regular basis, in the meanwhile, have the capability and flexibility to develop proof-of-concept tools in a timely manner.
  • Actively serve as subject matter expert whenever it comes to technology evaluation regarding various IT technologies within data science.
  • Serve as a strong lias between data science function and IT.
  • Adhere to security protocol for different data sets.

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Advanced degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, engineering or related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in a hands-on data/software engineering role, working experience in pharmaceutical industries is a plus.
  • Solid experience in PHP, MySQL, KnockoutJS (or any other JavaScript framework), GIT, Linux, Unix, will be considered an asset.
  • A strong understanding and solid hands-on experience of RDBMS and SQL systems, analytics platform, Java and Python, ETL, Hadoop, Spark, Yarn, Kafka, and other tools is necessary. Knowledge of hardware required for effective database operations.
  • Experience with GitHub, cloud-based environments.
  • Creative problem-solver with excellent communication skills - able to convey complex concepts to technical and business teams in a simple and understandable way.
  • Proven tracking records of multi-omics data management and associated analytics platform building is required.
  • Track records of building and supporting various data platforms in pharma R&D is a strong plus.
  • Experience of addressing data compliance & localisation challenges with China data compliance right (e.g., CBDT, CSL) in the data platform related project is a strong plus. 
  • Experience with GxP system is a strong plus.
  • Agile experience is a plus.
  • PMP certificate is preferred.
