Job Summary

Academic Advisor position serves as the primary Academic Advisor for undergraduates (online and on-campus) majoring in Computer Science.

This position is also responsible for assisting in promoting the College's undergraduate programs, student recruitment, and student retention, and guiding students through graduation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Student Advising: Works with students to choose specific courses to meet degree requirements and develop detailed degree/educational plans that are consistent with their educational, career, and life goals. Meets with and helps undergraduate students to select specific courses each semester. Teaches students academic policies and procedures that will help them be successful. Helps students access campus resources that will enhance their ability to be academically successful. Assist in identifying faculty mentors based on student career interest and personality characteristics.
  • Student Retention and Outreach: Helps to develop student retention and outreach strategies, implements and carryout retention and outreach strategies, and provides feedback on the refinement of retention and outreach strategies. Participates in retention activities as a representative of the College, including activities that require evening/weekend work hours. Assist in developing and implement relevant policies and procedures, and ensure the ongoing examination of College-based practices for advising. Proactively reviews and evaluates such policies and procedures on a continuing basis in order to anticipate unmet needs and identify service gaps, enabling efficient and effective responses to students. Assists students in overcoming educational and personal problems. Provides a personal contact that connects students to the programs and institution in order to better retain students and foster an environment that is welcoming and engaging with diverse populations and emphasizes a personal feel.
  • Recruitment: Respond to student inquiries, participate in recruitment events, and help develop promotional materials. Identify, attend, and participate in recruiting events, such as Preview Day and College Fairs, to promote CPAE undergraduate programs (may require some evening/weekend hours and travel). Meet with prospective students referred by the Admissions office or alternative sources. Provide timely, accurate information to potential student inquiries referred by the Admissions office or alternative sources. Assist in producing informative and engaging materials that promote the programs. Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with high schools, community Colleges, and other entities to increase awareness of the College's undergraduate programs.
  • Student Onboarding: Meet with and onboard incoming undergraduate students (online and traditional). Insures a smooth transition for students through the College experience, either as transfer students or from first year advising to College and major advising. Maintain working relationships with undergraduate students throughout the program to help with student retention. Participate in orientation activities as a representative of CPAE. Participates in orientation activities as a representative of the College, including activities that require evening/weekend hours.
  • Tracking & Analysis: Reviews and Utilizes available data about students' academic and educational needs, retention performance, aspirations, and problems. Develop and implement relevant policies and procedures, and ensure ongoing examination of College-based practices for advising. Continually review and analyze practices to anticipate unmet needs and service inefficiencies regarding advising and student progress.
  • Administrative: Participate in meetings and on committees as a representative of the departments and College as requested. Maintain open communication with other program/college advisors and the Office of Admissions, the Office of Advising Services, and the other UIS Offices. Continually seek out development opportunities, best practices in advising and retention.
  • Completion of other assigned duties: Assisting with non-reoccurring activities related to student recruitment, advising and retention.
