Job Description:

Berklee College of Music, a global leader in contemporary music education, seeks

a dynamic musician, educator, and administrative leader to serve as the Chair of

the Ensemble Department. Located in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts, the

Berklee community consists of over 5,000 talented and diverse students, 840

internationally respected faculty, over 600 dedicated staff, and an extended

family of alumni, whose nearly 500 Grammy awards testify to their contributions

to the music of our time.

The Ensemble Department includes over 70 department faculty and 93 adjunct

faculty who teach nearly 500 ensembles and performance classes to over 3,000

Berklee students weekly. Our mission is to prepare students for careers in music

through theoretic and practical training. Also included, is training in reading and

interpreting music from traditionally notated scores, chord-symbol lead sheets,

and playing by ear. Special emphasis is given to stylistic interpretation,

musicianship, improvisational skills, the use of technology in producing and

performing music, as well as studio and stage performance skills as applied to

contemporary musical styles.

The Ensemble Department Chair is the chief academic officer and advocate for

the Ensemble Department. Subsequently, they will oversee the department,

spearhead curriculum design, leverage technology in pedagogy and performance,

foster faculty development, and contribute to Berklee's overall mission.

We are seeking an accomplished musician, experienced educator, and highly

skilled leader who embodies a commitment to innovation, excellence in

contemporary music education, and embraces diversity in individuals and

perspectives. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator, a person of

integrity, and well-organized. Furthermore, they must possess a strong work

ethic, a deep understanding of diverse musical styles, and embody a collaborative

spirit. Additionally, they should have a track record as an effective administrator

with a background of successful employment in a collegiate setting.

A Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience is required. This is a

twelve-month position with a renewable contract. The start date for the position

is September 1, 2024, or earlier depending on availability.

Key Responsibilities:

o Provide visionary, empathetic, and principle-centered leadership for the

Ensemble Department

o Supervision of the department’s musical and educational direction,

including: further development of a curriculum focusing on instrumental

technique, reading, stylistic interpretation, improvisational skills, health and

wellness in performance, and the use of technology in teaching and

performance

o Supervision, hiring, evaluation, and development of faculty

o Faculty scheduling and student advising

o Effectively manage the Ensemble Department’s budget and facilities

o Manage department concerts, masterclass/clinics, visiting artist, and

special programs

Qualifications:

o Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience

o Proven expertise as an accomplished musician, experienced educator, and

effective administrator

o National visibility as a musician, with a comprehensive understanding of

contemporary musical styles.

o Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

o Track record of success in collegiate-level teaching

o Effective communication and leadership skills
