Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), the Vice President, Clinical Finance is responsible for overseeing and optimizing the financial performance of CUIMC’s clinical services enterprise, including faculty practice, hospital affiliation, medical service agreement, and other related activities. In this capacity, the VP, Clinical Finance will provide direct support to the CEO, ColumbiaDoctors / Senior Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, VP&S and will serve as the lead liaison from the CUIMC Finance organization to the ColumbiaDoctors organization, the clinical leadership of CUIMC schools and departments, and to key points of contact within the finance team of CUIMC’s primary hospital affiliate, NewYork-Presbyterian.

The VP, Clinical Finance will be directly responsible for monitoring, overseeing, and optimizing CUIMC clinical services financial performance and will supervise teams responsible for (1) tracking, forecasting, and improving school and department clinical services financial outcomes, (2) directing the financial aspects of clinically-related new business development, and (3) producing, analyzing, and distributing clinical services financial analytics. In this capacity, the VP, Clinical Finance will have direct responsibility for advising CUIMC leadership on clinical expansion opportunities (including the development of new practice locations and the hiring of new clinical providers), guiding and overseeing clinical funds flow with affiliate institutions, monitoring the cost effectiveness of clinical support services, preparing budgets and forecasts for clinical services financial activities, representing CUIMC on various boards and committees overseeing joint venture and shared services activities with NYP and Cornell, and negotiating with various third party entities providing services such as malpractice insurance coverage.

The VP, Clinical Finance will supervise the administrators of clinical departments of the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons with regard to the financial performance of clinical services activities. In this capacity, the VP, Clinical Finance will collaborate with departmental leadership to develop objectives for clinical financial performance, closely monitor progress toward those objectives, initiate and assist with performance improvement initiatives, and regularly interact with departmental leadership to ensure that all opportunities for improvement of financial performance consistent with the values and goals of the institution are effectively pursued.

In addition, the VP, Clinical Finance is responsible for ensuring tight integration and productive collaboration between the CUIMC Clinical Finance team and various internal partners. These include the CUIMC Controller Office’s responsible for clinical services accounting functions, the CUIMC Budget and Financial Planning unit charged with monitoring and forecasting the overall financial health of the campus, and the ColumbiaDoctors organization providing central practice operations, provider enrollment, and other support functions to the faculty practice community.

The VP, Clinical Finance is expected to serve as a senior member of the CUIMC leadership team, to provide expert, experience-based guidance on the management of the clinical services enterprise, and to serve as an independent, collaborative leader.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration plus ten years of related finance experience with demonstrated leadership and management skills in a complex healthcare related organization is required.
  • Excellent knowledge of financial concepts, budgeting, fund accounting and related information systems as well as experience with clinical operations in a practice or hospital setting required.
  • Previous experience in the management of revenue cycle services is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to oversee quantitative, financial, and variance analyses as well as financial modeling required.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate complex financial material to chairs, faculty, and other non-financial staff required.
  • Ability to work with minimal oversight to solve problems and to multi-task in a fast-paced environment required.
  • Ability to work closely and effectively with a diverse group of senior administrators, peers, and subordinates required.
  • Ability to perform other related duties as assigned or requested required.
