The Opportunity…

Reporting to the HQ Senior Director of Government Strategy and Development and in partnership with the affiliate Executive Director, the Institutional Partnerships Manager leads the fund development efforts as GRID Alternatives Bay Area continues to expand its government contracts, program offerings and community partnership engagement. The Institutional Partnerships Manager is a fund development position for the affiliate, and internally, leads and oversees strategy, and implementation of GRID’s government and foundation funding goals. The operating budget for GRID Alternatives Bay Area is approximately $6 to 8 million annually. Currently, the funding portfolio is majority government contracts and state rebates and less than 5% from corporations and foundations. A successful candidate must have demonstrated success with government (federal, state, and local) proposals and contracts and experience with foundation grants preferred.

All Managers at GRID Alternatives must be able to advance the organization's equity, inclusion, and diversity work and understand that this can only be achieved within a framework of social, economic, and environmental justice. 

Job Duties include, but are not limited to:

Leadership

  • Contribute to the Philanthropy team in creating and implementing government and foundation development goals in collaboration with the Bay Area Executive Director
  • Build and deepen regional networks and partnerships for GRID Bay Area in collaboration with the Executive Director, leadership team, and philanthropy staff, including government and foundation relationships
  • As a member of the Management Team, practice inclusive leadership and serve as an effective role model for staff and GRID and collaborate, coordinate, and cooperate with GRID HQ, other affiliates, and affiliate Board

Fundraising

  • Develop, execute, and monitor government development strategies to meet goals 
  • Oversee grant development, including serving as the prime grant writer and managing all aspects of developing proposals in response to government RFPs and funding notices, conducting ongoing research to identify and qualify new funding opportunities, managing contract review and negotiations in coordination with GRID staff, and coordinating grant reporting and data tracking
  • Work directly with the Philanthropy team and Bay Area Executive Director to spearhead efforts to raise major 5- to 7-figure funding partnerships from California-based philanthropic foundations, including developing and implementing fundraising and thought leadership strategies 
  • Oversee budget development-specific grant and contract management, including collecting data, working with accounting for general financial management, and reporting to funders 
  • Approve scope and budgets on grant and contract opportunities under $50k, and consult with Executive Director and HQ Accounting on larger and cross-departmental funding opportunities
  • Work collaboratively with GRID HQ and other affiliate development staff on national and cross-regional government grant opportunities 
  • Provide key thought leadership and drive collaboration with Bay Area leadership on foundation and fundraising strategy, case for support development, and identifying opportunities to grow program and organizational capacity through major partnerships
  • Serve as a key member of GRID Alternatives’ national fundraising leadership team, including developing long-term fund development strategies and related thought leadership efforts around the importance of equitable renewable energy and clean transportation programs
  • Promote a Culture of Philanthropy across the organization

What you need to bring to this role...

  • 3-5+ years experience successfully preparing and implementing grant and/or contract proposals to the U.S. Government at City, State and/or Federal levels and managing active contracts and foundation grants, preferably in the energy, environmental or sustainability sectors
  • 2+ years managing a team, with supervisory experience hiring and managing individual staff preferred
  • Written communication skills: ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals and reports
  • Excellent project management and problem-solving skills
  • Be a “self-starter” and goal-driven to initiate government funding opportunities
  • Be organized and exhibit follow-through on tasks and goals
  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for mission, people, and community
  • Demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense, and good listening ability
  • Experience preferred using Salesforce.com CRM or similar database systems
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat to fulfill technical and formatting proposal requirements

Where you will sit and the places you may go…

This position may rarely require up to 25% out-of-town travel to regional offices and special projects such as company-wide celebrations, team building exercises, etc. Availability to work nights and weekends may very rarely be required.

GRID Alternatives may provide vehicles for work travel and/or travel reimbursement for personal vehicle use. In this instance, applicants must hold a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.

This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary pay commensurate with experience within the pay band ($80k-$110k annually), plus the benefits below.
