The Center for Applied Isotope Studies is the largest Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory / Radiocarbon AMS Dating Facility in the United States that is accredited under ISO/IEC 17025:2017. Minimum QualificationsRequires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred QualificationsTwo semesters of college level chemistry with a science degree is preferred.

Position SummaryThis position will process samples for isotopic analysis. This includes the weighing and loading of various chemical constituents into various sample containers. Some will use a high vacuum processing system and involve sealing samples inside quartz and Pyrex tubing using a hand-held torch. In addition, the use of cryogenic materials is used in the processing of samples. With increased competence, technicians are trained on more complex techniques of sample preparation.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies 

  • On-site training is essential to accurate processing of samples.
  • General knowledge at or above High School chemistry is beneficial in
  • understanding of techniques.

Physical Demands 

  • Reasonable dexterity and excellent penmanship.
  • Standing/sitting for hours at a time during sample processing in addition to occasional bending, stooping, and lifting 25-35 pounds.
  • Driving as needed to perform job related duties.
