Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development, the Senior Director of Gift Planning leads the Gift Planning program and team. The Senior Director is responsible for designing, directing, and implementing a comprehensive effort to promote and secure planned gifts. The incumbent also manages an individual portfolio of select prospects and donors. To build on a track record of raising over $20 million a year in gift planning revenue, the Senior Director establishes annual goals, strategies, and tactics to increase year-over-year results.

As a key member of the Development Office, the Senior Director serves as a consultant on complex current and deferred gifts. The Senior Director champions a multiple ask/blended gift strategy that adds planned gift asks to restricted gift and Wellesley Fund asks, where appropriate as well as educates Development staff to build awareness of planned gift opportunities across all donor segments.

The Senior Director oversees the Office of Gift Planning’s relationships with Finance, the Investment Office, General Counsel, State Street, BNY Mellon, and PG Calc.

Primary Position Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Leads the Gift Planning program, encompassing planned gifts, gifts in kind, gifts of real estate, and other unusual assets.
  • Develops and implements an annual marketing program to secure planned gifts.
  • Acts as a resource to Development staff regarding complex gift strategies.
  • Trains frontline staff to keep them current on planned gifts and other related philanthropic opportunities.
  • Develops planned gift and blended gift strategies as part of campaign planning.
  • Sets goals for the Office of Gift Planning and related goals to encourage frontline identification of gift planning opportunities.
  • Partners closely with the Assistant Vice President for Development and the Senior Director of Annual Giving Programs to develop intergrated fundraising strategies to increase philanthropic revenue.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in Leadership and Principal Giving, and The Wellesley Fund to meet individual and shared programmatic and dollar goals.
  • Assists in the establishment of policies and procedures that reflect industry best practices related to gift documentation and administration.
  • Identifies, qualifies, cultivates, and solicits a select pool of Wellesley alumnae, parents, and friends in support of the College’s priorities.
  • Travels as appropriate to meet with prospects and donors for visits as well as events.
  • Carries out other projects and duties as required.

Management

  • Manages the Gift Planning team, overseeing day-to-day operations, workflow, and activities of the team.
  • Oversees a staff of 3 direct reports: Associate Director of Gift Planning, Assistant Director of Gift Planning, and Administrative Assistant.
  • Provides effective leadership, supervision, coaching, and models professionalism to staff members in the optimum performance of their roles.
  • Regularly evaluates staff performance against established goals and work plans to ensure alignment of activities with the highest priorities of the Development division.
  • Recruits, trains, and mentors staff. Aligns work and delegates effectively in order to utilize staff and resources to their maximum potential.

Performance Profile

  • In conjunction with other members of the frontline fundraising team, successful completion of fiscal year fundraising efforts.
  • In concert with other leaders in the division, the development and implementation of “best practice” standards for planned gift acquisition and administration.
  • A motivated and effective staff which has the support, resources, skills, and freedom to do their jobs well.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; a relevant advanced degree is helpful; a JD is preferred.
  • Years of experience in planned giving or a related field, an ability to articulate a cohesive vision, and the energy to implement goals that drive and strengthen a successful planned giving program.
  • Deep knowledge of planned and complex gifts, legacy gift marketing as well as the regulatory framework underpinning a comprehensive planned giving program.
  • Knowledge of how planned giving fits into a campaign and understanding how to develop and implement planned gift goals as part of a successful comprehensive campaign.
  • Proven competency in managing people and programs successfully and demonstrated integrity, outstanding communication skills, exceptional judgment, and the ability to establish strong collegial relationships with other members of the Development team, campus partners, and vendors.
  • Strong analytical skills, an understanding of best practices nationally, and the ability to build and motivate staff to work towards ambitious goals.
  • Authentic appreciation for liberal arts education and women’s education, particularly the education and opportunities provided by Wellesley, and an ability to articulate eloquently its mission.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and as a strategic partner and member of the Development division.
  • Flexibility and the demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, complex, academic environment, juggling numerous projects and satisfying numerous constituencies simultaneously.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship-building skills; excellent communication, leadership, and listening skills; as well as the ability to work effectively and communicate clearly (verbal, written, and presentation) with all levels of management and both technical and non-technical staff.

Development Overview

The fundraising team in the Wellesley College Development Office works in support of the College’s mission to educate women who will make a difference in the world. In 2018 Wellesley concluded the college’s most successful fundraising campaign to date a year ahead of schedule - The Wellesley Effect raised $514M and priorities included intellectual excellence, affordability and access, capital projects, and progressive programs and projects for the 21st century. With a development team of approximately 40 members, the Wellesley development team raises $100M annually and is looking forward to their next campaign effort with planning slated to begin in the next two years.
