Role: Specialist Engineer - Application Services

Role Profile 

The role is within the Trading Technology Application Services team which sits within the Capital Markets Application Services Division. We strive for our engineers to work within small, agile, self-managed teams that emphasise best practice and believe quality is everyone’s responsibility. They bring an enthusiastic “you build it you run it” mindset whilst making sure they share their knowledge while removing constraints. 

The aim of the role is to strengthen our ability to plan, engineer and support Millennium Technologies (MIT) FXI and Equities exchange systems, to evolve the system to meet new requirements, proactively prevent and resolve issues that may impact these services and to provide reactive support in a mission critical environment. The ideal candidate will possess a broad skillset covering DevOps and application support, as well as in-depth knowledge and experience of the MIT trading and risk platforms. The role is most suited to candidates willing to embrace a demanding and varied but balanced and flexible work pattern, which would include covering on-site shifts, participating in the 24x7 on-call rota and supporting weekend testing according to project requirements.

A large part of the role is project based, including playing a key part in improving and evolving our MIT application systems, develop the operational life cycle, upgrading existing systems and implementing integration into the operations architecture toolset. The candidate will also be responsible for take part in DevOps activities for the team and work on AWS based implementations and CI/CD deployments

Millennium Exchange, Linux, AWS, Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins, Datadog, Moogsoft, Big Panda, Git, Bitbucket, Elastic Search, Scripting Technologies (Bash / Python / PowerShell), Control-M, Jira, Confluence. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide level 2 technical advice and risk assessment based on knowledge of applications, & underlying infrastructure.
  • Set up and configure all the environments related to the system
  • Assist the hardware maintenance tasks
  • Guarantee that the environments properly work every day, ensuring a prompt support during the functional/customers test sessions;
  • Work with AWS, Jenkins, and Bit Bucket for Continuous Integration and cloud hosted environments.
  • Ensure that all operational responsibilities are performed including monitoring systems and deploying releases
  • Provide effective escalation and resolution of issues and problems to stakeholders
  • Take ownership of operational live service issues and drive their resolution to reduce the number of recurring technical issues
  • Support the writing of the technical documentation needed for operation for recurring incidents or tasks.
  • Ensure changes are correctly impact assessed and implemented successfully within the agreed Service Levels
  • Take part in the out of hours support ROcovering on call and weekend work
  • IT Service Management exposure.
  • Proactively identify operational risks. Provide short term solutions whilst tracking long term resolution.
  • Identify and implement operational improvements for processes, performance and reliability
  • Provide input to architectural design for network, infrastructure, database and applications
  • Develop an understanding of procedures and SLAs for all services supported by the team.

Candidate Background and Skillset

  • Experience in automating infrastructure provisioning and application deployment in AWS.
  • Build CI/CD pipelines orchestrating the promotion of code or. infrastructure as code
  • Define and implement cloud native operational requirements .
  • Experience in Linux operating systems (Red hat), SQL, Basic Networking & Strong BASH scripting knowledge – any additional scripting knowledge beneficial
  • Some experience of IT Service Management & Monitoring Tools (i.e. Service Now, Jira, MoogSoft, DataDog, BigPanda, and ControlM.)
  • Pro-active approach to learning about and adapting to new technologies
  • Application knowledge and experience preferably gained within a mission critical support environment
  • Proven ability to identify and implement process improvements and automation
  • Some knowledge of Capital Markets or of working in the financial industry would be preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to share information and work individually or as part of a team to solve problems
  • Educated and holding a degree level qualification (preferably in an IT discipline)
  • ITIL qualification preferred but not essential
