Position Summary 

Reporting to a Campus Ministry Director within the Division of Mission Integration and Ministry, the Director of Muslim Life holds a key position leading campus strategy to support the spiritual, academic, cultural, and personal lives of the Muslim students, faculty, and staff at Fordham University.

This individual will foster a vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive environment that respects the diversity within the Muslim faith and actively contributes to the interfaith initiatives. They will serve as a spiritual leader, counselor, and educator for the Muslim community and the campus at large, as well as a representative of the University and the Division of Mission to diverse and varied campus and community groups.

The Director will serve the Rose Hill and Lincoln Center campuses and is expected to divide time between the two locations.

Essential Functions 

Needs Assessment

  • Assess specific needs and preferences of Muslim students, faculty, and staff of the Fordham community, then develop and implement programs and initiatives to enhance spiritual and cultural support. Foster collaboration with other University constituents to shape the future of Muslim life on campus.
  • Develop strategic proposals and initiatives based on assessment findings to better meet the spiritual, pastoral, and communal needs of the Muslim community.

Spiritual Leadership and Interfaith Collaboration

  • Coordinate diverse Islamic religious services (e.g. Jummah prayers, Ramadan events) and interfaith and multifaith programs on and off campus and provide tailored spiritual guidance, fostering a stronger sense of community and identity among Muslim students while promoting understanding, respect, and collaboration among diverse religious groups on campus.
  • Collaborate, plan, and implement interfaith prayer services such as the annual “Interfaith Prayer & Picnic with the President” and those that respond to the needs of the Fordham community.

Community Building

  • Foster and nurture a safe, welcoming environment for individuals from all sects and ethnic backgrounds within the Islamic faith; ideally a leader who can be in communication and collaboration with mosques, institutions of learning, and spirituality partners in the NYC area to meet diverse needs. Engage with leaders from different religious backgrounds to organize events, panels, and discussions that foster a multicultural and multi-faith understanding.
  • Develop, organize, and facilitate community-building programs and events that enhance the spiritual, intellectual, and cultural life of the Muslim community. Liaise with campus partners including academic affairs, dining services, student affairs and other areas to serve the needs and goals of the Muslim campus community.

Education and Counseling

  • Offer religious and spiritual education opportunities that cater to the diverse needs and backgrounds of the Muslim community.
  • Provide confidential one-on-one and group pastoral counseling, spiritual direction, and crisis intervention, referring individuals to professional mental health resources when necessary.

Additional Functions 

  • Collaborate closely with Mission Integration staff and university administration, participating in regular meetings and contributing to the mission of the University.
  • Manage administrative tasks, including budgeting for events, maintaining records, and reporting as necessary.
  • Support student-led campus and community initiatives, including serving as advisor to faith-based clubs and organizations as needed (e.g. Muslim Student Associations at Rose Hill and Lincoln Center).

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience 

  • A degree in Islamic Studies, Theology, Religious Studies, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in chaplaincy, pastoral care, or community religious leadership.

Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills 

  • Strong understanding and respect for diversity within the Islamic faith and commitment to interfaith dialogue and cooperation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and public speaking skills.
  • Crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Advanced degree
  • Familiarity with the university environment and needs of students, faculty, and staff is preferred.

Minimum Starting Salary $70,000

Maximum Starting Salary $80,000

Note Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
