The Center for Bioimage Informatics at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is seeking a Senior Image Data Scientist. This role will be responsible for basic and advanced analysis of biomedical imagery data produced from a variety of imaging techniques such as light and electron microscopy, MRI, mass-spec imaging, H&E, …etc. The successful candidate will develop, test, maintain, evaluate, and operate image analysis solutions based on existing and custom software, and will provide training on image analysis software, both in house developed or developed elsewhere. As a Senior Image Data Scientist, you will work closely with researchers to understand analytical needs and provide technical consultation, design image analysis approaches, test pipeline performance and perform custom analyses and results evaluation. You will also have the chance to work closely with software engineers and data scientists to organize, manage and maintain imagery data and image analysis software repositories. This is an R&D support role, designed to propel image-based research forward by applying cutting edge machine learning and computer vision technology to biomedical imagery. You will act as project lead to coordinate image analysis efforts, initiate new efforts and/or synergize with ongoing ones. In this role, you are also expected to keep up to date with latest image analysis works and tools, and to participate in dissemination of technical knowledge through formal reports, workshops,hackathons, seminars and journal clubs.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs independent analysis of biomedical imagery produced from a variety of imaging platforms including light microscopy, electron microscopy, CT, MRI and ultrasound, …etc.
  • Consults with St. Jude researchers and staff to exploit the full potential of image analysis in propelling individual experiments and research projects forward
  • Develops algorithms, computer vision techniques and image data analysis pipelines utilizing a variety of existing and custom software libraries
  • Works collaboratively on image analysis software development with other data scientists and software engineers, observing highest software engineering standards
  • Deploys algorithms in an HPC context and optimizes for accuracy and speed
  • Designs and prepares materials for training lab scientists on various image analysis software packages and image data management systems
  • Leads the development, implementation, and maintenance of software for image compression, deconvolution, registration, segmentation, meta-data management and visualization
  • Leads the evaluation of image processing solutions developed within St. Jude and externally, as they pertain to the needs of research projects
  • Communicates to researchers on the design and implementation of projects and delivers regular project progress reports with clarity and accuracy
  • Performs other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals of the department and institution

  • Design, develop, test, maintain, evaluate, document and operate image analysis computer programs. Develop image analysis pipelines and image data visualization solutions based on existing and custom software.
  • Consult with and provide training on image analysis software, both in-house or externally developed.
  • Work closely with researchers to understand analytical needs and provide technical consultation, design image analysis approaches, generate reports and perform custom analyses and results evaluation.
  • Work closely with software engineers and data scientists to organize, manage and maintain imagery data and image analysis software repositories.
  • Act as project lead to coordinate image analysis efforts and synergize with ongoing efforts.
  • Keep up-to-date with latest image analysis works and participate in dissemination of technical knowledge through formal reports, workshops, hackathons, seminars and journal clubs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, bioinformatics, computer science, data science, computer engineering or related field required.
  • Master's or PHD degree preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Eight (8) years of relevant experience is highly preferred
  • Four (4) years of relevant experience may be acceptable with a Master's degree
  • No experience may be acceptable with a PHD in a relevant field
  • Experience in programming with at least two established programming languages (e.g. Python, R, Matlab, Java, C/C++) is required
  • Experience in applying Machine Learning and Computer Vision to biomedical imagery is strongly preferred 
  • Experience in and the ability to communicate clearly and consult with a wide range of users and colleagues is required
  • Experience in using established image analysis platforms (e.g.: ImageJ/Fiji, CellProfiler, Cellpose) is strongly preferred
  • Experience in Deep Learing is strongly preferred 
  • Experience in scientific computing and scientific data visualization is preferred
  • Experience in scientific computer code optimization and evaluation in an HPC environment is preferred
  • Experience in development of algorithms, statistical methods or scientific software preferred.
  • Experience in working with large image data volumes is preferred.
  • Experience in biological/medical imaging is preferred
  • Experience in personnel management preferred
  • Minimum Requirement: Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of work experience in relevant area (e.g., applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, bioinformatics, computer science, data science, computer engineering) required.
  • Experience Exception: Master's degree with 1+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in image analyses, image data management, and programming (e.g., Python, R, Matlab, Java, C/C++).
  • Experience in image analysis platforms (e.g., ImageJ/Fiji, CellProfiler), scientific computing, scientific data visualization, scientific computer code optimization and evaluation in an HPC environment, development of algorithms, statistical methods or scientific software, working with large image data volumes, biological/medical imaging preferred.
  • Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role.
