Primary Objectives

HSB Canada’s Head Office Engineering Department (HOED) is our center of competence for technical consultancy and risk assessment of highly exposed risks across North America. Our multi-disciplined team of experienced engineers assesses operational risks, equipment breakdown, and inherent hazards across a multitude of industrial processes. Our expertise supports our Underwriters, Claims Adjusters, Brokers, and Insureds in quantitatively assessing risk and recommending meaningful loss control practices. We are looking for a self-directed Engineer with strong analytical skills and attention to detail to join our team as a Process Engineer. This position reports to the HOED Engineering Manager and is responsible for managing and leading HOED’s engineering & standards obligations, data analytics, project implementation, process mapping, and QA/QC work.

Although prior insurance experience would be an asset, we welcome professionals from the broader engineering industry to consider a transition to the Insurance Engineering space. If you are a seasoned professional, such as a process engineer, chemical engineer, project engineer, QC engineer (or similar/mix), then this position could be a fit for you.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Upkeep of HSB’s Engineering Standards in line with required review cycles.
  • Prepare detailed loss estimates (cost to repair/replace estimates) for mechanical and electrical equipment and operating systems based on market and industry intelligence, internal data, and engineering expertise and judgment.
  • Buildout and maintenance of standard engineering tools and templates.
  • Contribute to the growth, improvement, and instruction of intellectual capital through the development of technical articles, educational tutorials, and technical bulletins.
  • Work collaboratively with HSB Engineering, Underwriters, Inspections and Claims, and HSB US counterparts to ensure value-added work is completed on time and with technical due diligence.
  • Comprehensive data analysis of equipment breakdown occurrences, losses, and claims to identify commonalities and trends.
  • Create and maintain dashboards and reports to support management activities.
  • Support the development, upkeep, and improvement of department SOPs’ through business process mapping, data analytics, and application of continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Supporting department quality management system by performing routine QC tasks, internal quality audits, and analytics of quality data.
  • Lead the execution of internal initiatives and projects including planning, implementation, monitoring, controlling, and reporting.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical / Mechanical Engineering or equivalent,
  • At least 5 years of experience working within the engineering field with exposure to process design, data analytics, and project management, (or similar/mix),
  • At least 1 year of experience in cost estimation,
  • Experience in at least one of the following industries: power, mining, chemical, nuclear, oil & gas, or manufacturing,
  • Broad exposure and knowledge of different equipment types and technologies is considered an asset,
  • Proficient in building and enhancing simple IT tools and systems based on the Microsoft Environment (such as SharePoint, Power BI, Excel, MS Word, etc.),
  • Exposure to Quality Management functions and processes is considered an asset,
  • Working knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies and process improvement,
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and technical documents,
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail,
  • Excellent oral, presentation, and written communication skills.
