Role Overview

For more than 25 years Ipsos Scotland has worked closely with government and a wide range of other public and third sector organisations, using our evaluation and social research expertise to provide robust evidence on the effectiveness of public policies and programmes and advise policy makers on their service delivery. We carry out the full range of quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method research studies and evaluations.

Our work spans the public policy agenda and has a direct bearing on the decisions made by government, organisations and citizens. We take that seriously and, because of this, do work of the highest quality that stands up to close scrutiny.

This is an exciting opportunity for a researcher or consultant with some experience to manage high profile studies for a range of government and other public, private and third sector clients in Scotland. You will have the opportunity to work across our projects and business development activities.

We may appoint at either Senior Research Executive or Research Executive level depending on the successful candidate’s skills and experience.

We are looking for someone flexible who brings mixed-methods and/or qualitative research experience. The successful applicant will be able to undertake research and assist evaluations, and build on these to advise our clients.

The main responsibilities will include:

Supporting the delivery of research and evaluation projects through the full project cycle, from design, to data collection and analysis, through to developing conclusions and recommendations;

Expanding your methodological knowledge through the delivery of mixed-method research studies and evaluations;

Supporting day-to-day client relationships while ensuring projects are delivered to budget and timescale through efficient working practices;

Drafting research plans, evaluation frameworks, research tools and analysis plans;

  • Contributing to winning proposals, including developing costs.
  • Managing multiple projects, or strands of projects, simultaneously.
  • Communicating effectively with clients, project partners, internal and external suppliers, and internal colleagues both in writing and verbally.
  • Supporting more junior team members to develop their skills.
  • Undertaking day to day management of projects including questionnaire design, liaising with Operations colleagues to monitor fieldwork, quantitative or qualitative analysis, reporting and presenting.
  • Managing finances on individual projects to ensure that projects are delivered not just on time but also to budget.
  • Proposing innovative/ alternative methodologies for our clients.
  • Seeking opportunities to grow our business by taking a proactive approach to developing knowledge of our clients’ needs.
  • Contributing to our positive, supportive team environment where people are encouraged to challenge themselves to develop their skills

The majority of your time will be spent on evaluation projects, however there may also be occasions when you work on other qualitative or quantitative research projects.

Ipsos UK offers a hybrid working environment, 3 days in the office and working the rest from home.

What do I need to bring with me?

This role will suit candidates who enjoy working closely with clients, often delivering at a fast pace. We welcome interest from people with skills in both quantitative and qualitative research methods or qualitative methods. Any evaluation experience would be helpful but not essential, while a willingness to learn about evaluation design, methods and delivery is essential.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A desire to work closely with clients to maintain and grow our contracts.
  • Excellent organisation, attention to detail and research skills, able to manage multiple projects from proposal to delivery and manage project finances.
  • Proven ability to work well in teams and work across multiple projects, prioritising tasks efficiently
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines to deliver high quality and profitable work and have a desire to innovate and learn.
  • Well-developed analytical skills and the ability to understand and interpret complex data.
  • Ability to draw out a clear narrative and insight to inform policies and clients’ decision-making.
  • Confident and clear written and verbal communication skills, including experience of preparing presentations and reports with a high level and accurate use of English.
  • Desirable: policy knowledge and expertise in relevant areas (e.g. economic development, poverty and inequality, education), or ability to pick up new policy areas – note that methods and analytical skills are more important than policy knowledge.
