The Position

Our Global Internship Programme in Innovation & Sustainability #IP2TIS offers a unique opportunity for passionate individuals to gain hands-on experience in the pharmaceutical industry while making a positive impact on the world. As a sustainability and innovation intern, you will work on cutting-edge projects that align with our commitment to environmental responsibility, social impact, and forward-thinking solutions.

Project: Pathology sustain: a creative approach to find short-term improvements in product waste management in cancer diagnostics routine for labs.

Background: minimizing waste production, environmental impact, exposure to chemicals and facilitating management is a priority for Roche to ensure we are on path to meet our ambition on sustainability. We see an opportunity to reduce and optimize waste and sustainability risks from Pathology Lab products in our diagnostics portfolio, which we used in cancer diagnosis for ~ 40 million patients last year. 

This internship position is located in Tucson, Arizona (USA) on site or hybrid. 

Key Responsibilities

  • This project is directly connected to our ambition to minimize the impact of our medicines and diagnostic products on the environment throughout the entire product life cycle. 
  • The candidate would work with relevant functions to explore direct options to reduce waste production, exposure to chemicals and facilitating waste management in the Pathology product line in diagnostics. 
  • Connect with a multidisciplinary team in Europe and global quality and product teams in the USA. 
  • Partner with global teams to identify options to measure and/or mitigate impact from:
  • Solid waste recycling
  • Reduction of toxicity in liquid waste 
  • Energy consumption 
  • Air quality and noise levels
  • Propose options to validate solutions with European customers
  • Explore third-party solutions to improve ergonomics of waste management.

Who You Are

You are enrolled or have completed your Bachelor’s or Master’s studies at a university, preferably in the field of Chemical engineering, Chemistry, Sustainability or Environmental studies within the last 12 months and are interested in applying your knowledge in a modern international working environment as part of an internship of at least 3 months and getting to know the pharmaceutical industry.

Furthermore you are

  • You enjoy approaching people and working with an international team to develop and implement concepts
  • You bring first-hand experiences and knowledge in the topics sustainability and waste management
  • Your comprehension enables you to combine different goals and wishes and to find suitable solutions
  • You are creative and like to put your ideas into practice
  • You are self-organized and structure your daily work
