This position is responsible for providing critical guidance and policy interpretation and coaching to managers on all aspects of people management and employee/labor relations. This includes progressive discipline and corrective action, employee job performance or behavior concerns, employee complaints and grievances, alternate dispute resolution and strategic management of employee or labor issues. This position is also responsible for employee questions and complaints, and conducting investigations in partnership with HR leadership, HR and ER Specialists, and Legal. Working closely with management, this position will help to define the organization's talent needs, including organization structure and staffing.

Job Description

  • Partner closely with management on ER related matters, performance management and talent development
  • Advising on employee discipline, underperformance, terminations, reasonable accommodations, complex leave scenarios and other related matters
  • Be available for employees to receive and address questions and concerns
  • Conduct workplace investigations as needed and recommend policy changes and enhancements based on investigation outcomes and trends
  • Monitor HR compliance with policy, HR systems, and applicable federal/state law (including but not limited to Worker’s Compensation, EEO, ADA, FMLA) collective bargaining agreements and labor laws.
  • Engage in and document the interactive process with applicants and employees requesting accommodations due to disability/medical and religious beliefs
  • Partner with our Talent Acquisition team to track and report on open positions and help manage the position requisition process for internal transfers to ensure accuracy of postings and facilitate internal movement.
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to track affirmative action trend.
  • Work and support people managers on HR/ER related projects such as training, policy and procedure updates predicated on business needs and corporate goals.
  • Leverage analysis of turnover to proactively identify issues within the business and develop plans to address and minimize controllable turnover.
  • Ensure effective on boarding of new associates to include partnership with Recruiting, with a focus on engagement with early career talent
  • Familiarity with collective bargaining agreements sufficient to provide guidance and/or flag issues for HR and Legal
  • Provides support to Operations team which includes non-recruitment hires, including extension of temporary appointments
  • Work in close partnership with other ER specialists and Legal teams to drive consistent ER processes across the organization while minimizing risk and ensuring a positive ethical workplace
  • Maintain detailed files for ER cases with a timely recording of notes and supporting documentation ;maintain files in electronic database once established.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, related field or professional experience equivalent
  • A minimum of 4-6 years of progressive experience in HR roles within fast-paced and matrix organizations
  • Experience with collective bargaining, negotiations, and consultations with labor unions
  • Advanced skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)

  • Bilingual English / Spanish
  • Work experience in the waste or transportation industry.
  • Coaches and influences all levels of employees and successfully delivers difficult messages
  • Maintains composure in a fast-paced, fluid environment and successfully navigates ambiguity to build consensus and achieve resolutions
  • Excitement to build Employee Relations COE and participate in foundational efforts
  • Proven ability to navigate ambiguity within a complex, dynamic and rapidly changing business environment
  • Proven ability to seamlessly transition between strategic thinking and tactical execution
  • Proven ability to prioritize the most impactful work amidst multiple competing priorities
  • Success in creating & driving effective and positive employee and labor relations for large populations of hourly employees

Salary $85,000 - $100,000
