Position Summary

Indiana University seeks internal nominations and applications for the critically important position of Associate Vice President for Research and Vice Provost for Research for the Bloomington campus.

Reporting to the Provost at IU Bloomington and to the IU Vice President for Research, the Vice Provost for Research for IU Bloomington is responsible for developing and administering research funding programs and research development services that act as a catalyst for initiating and advancing research and creative activity for faculty and researchers across IU Bloomington, as well as consulting with the Vice President for Research on IU’s external standing and responses related to compliance, innovation, commercialization, and other new matters.

As the chief research officer at IU Bloomington, the Vice Provost stewards campus research resources to foster high quality research and creative activity, including the distribution of funds for research centers and institutes, equipment, facilities, faculty startups, bridge funding, and other internal research awards. The Vice Provost will also interact with counterparts at other universities to facilitate collaborations that enhance campus connections with peer leading universities and other national and international research community partners to further solidify the campus’s national and international standing in research. The Vice Provost works in close partnership with research and academic deans at IU Bloomington and with other campus and university officers to enhance research at IU. These responsibilities include identifying external funding opportunities from federal, state, business, industry, and private sources. The Vice Provost serves as an advisor to the Provost and the Vice President on research matters and as a spokesperson regarding IU Bloomington research with various internal and external agencies.

The Vice Provost oversees the establishment, review, and sustainability of campus research centers, institutes, and museums at IUB. Working with faculty, the Vice Provost leverages the strengths of the centers, institutes, and museums to spur collaborative research that increases the campus’s capacity to garner large multidisciplinary awards. Under the Vice Provost’s direction, events and communications are designed to foster greater awareness of the resources and services provided by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research, which enhance both research development and funding prospects.

The position is a full-time, twelve-month position. Preferred start date is July 1, 2021.

Basic Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be:

  • an experienced and successful researcher with a history of external funding, publications, and productivity appropriate for one of the University’s top research officers;
  • a visionary leader familiar with challenges and opportunities in an increasingly competitive and global research context, and prepared to foster national and international collaborations;
  • an energetic advocate for a faculty consisting of outstanding and diverse researchers, scholars, and artists;
  • an experienced and capable administrator able to collaborate and build consensus across schools, disciplines, and campuses to enhance the University’s research profile;
  • an effective communicator able to articulate to various constituencies the importance of research and creative activity; and
  • a respected leader and university citizen, sensitive to and enthusiastic about the diversity of research programs and scholarship at IU Bloomington.

The successful candidate must be a full professor on the IU Bloomington faculty with a Ph.D and a minimum of two years of academic administrative experience.
