What your job will be like:

Design, construct, and maintain high precision regulated DC current sources for accelerator electromagnets. Assist engineers and technicians in troubleshooting power converters which could range from a few hundred watts up to 1MW continuous power. Assist other engineers in the group by performing research and development in power electronics engineering principles. Write firmware for embedded controls. Assist other engineers in support of experimental Halls and other R&D groups for any power converter system needs.

In this role you will:

  • Design electrical circuits for high precision regulated DC current sources for accelerator electromagnets. This work will be under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Failure analysis to reduce downtime and improve reliability.
  • Design and implement upgrades to existing systems to overcome obsolescence, preventative maintenance.
  • Write firmware and test scripts in VHDL, C, Python for new and existing designs.
  • Model and simulate electrical circuits in spice software.
  • Write technical reports, specification documents, user manuals, test procedures, failure analysis reports. Present reports at internal reviews and appropriate technical conferences.
  • Assist technicians in troubleshooting AC/DC and DC/DC power supplies.
  • Guide CAD designers on designing printed circuit boards (PCB) and mechanical assemblies.
  • Perform engineering calculations such as efficiency, output ripple, instantaneous current.
  • Test power supplies for electromagnets including superconducting magnets.
  • Participate in electrical safety training.
  • Interact with different groups and teams for engineering support.
  • Provide on-call support which includes responding to after-hours operational emergencies.

Qualifications We Require:

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Familiarity with electrical network theory, AC/DC power conversion, switch-mode power conversion, and phase-controlled AC-DC conversion and semiconductor devices,
  • Knowledge of control system theory, digital circuits and embedded systems is desired.,
  • Familiarity with engineering software such as LTSpice, Quartus, Matlab, Vivado, Simulink,
  • Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, computer coding and proficiency in computing is desired,
  • Experience with printed circuit board CAD software Altium. Electrical and mechanical CAD software such as Autocad, Fusion 360 would be helpful,
  • Able to communicate clearly in writing (e.g. email, memos, explanations, drawings) and explain work to his/her supervisor and others in the group,
  • Ability to understand complex problems and to collaborate and explore and implement alternative solutions,
  • Ability to analyze and interpret various types of electrical engineering data, develop systems and develop models,
  • Some working knowledge of micro controllers and FPGA’s,
  • Ability to complete required training such as: Qualified Electrical/Electronic Worker, Lockout/Tagout, Radiation Worker I and Oxygen Deficiency Hazards Training,
  • Knowledge of workplace safety practices and industry standards for building electronic equipment is desired,
  • Ability to interact constructively with technical staff, through writing or verbal communication, in a dynamic R&D environment is required,
  • On-call support of DC power systems during scheduled operational periods is required,
  • Familiarity with the following test equipment is required: oscilloscope, function generator, multi-meters for electrical measurements.,
