Overview

The Residential Life Supervisor is directly responsible for the creation of a therapeutic living environment for participants and for leading a team of Youth Development Counselors. 

Reports to: RESIDENTIAL LIFE DIRECTOR, 17TH STREET

Location: 337 East 17th St., New York, New York 10003

Hours: 40 Hours/Week 5/ days a Week Exempt 

Salary: Residential Life Supervisor (BA +3 years exp) $52,000 $57,000

Residential Life Supervisor (HS + 5 years exp) $50,000 $55,000

Major Duties:

  • Recruiting, interviewing, and hiring youth development Counselors and completing and submitting all necessary paperwork in accordance to the hiring process: interview notes, reference checks, PA forms, Etc. 
  • Developing and monitoring staff schedules and Staff coverage to assure compliance with youth:staff ratios 
  • Training and on boarding of YDC staff to assure proper orientation to the program. 
  • Collaborate with others in the develop of program policies and procedures such as incident reporting, awol reporting, program manual, achievement system, Staff task sheets, visitation policy, Supervision of youth, anti-bullying, return from AWOL policy, staff dress-code etc. 
  • Serve as leaders in therapeutic crisis intervention and further one's certification by becoming TCI trainers and maintain certification by attending on-going Cornell University trainings. 
  • Responsible for taking all program Staff (YDC, social workers, admin, receptionist, nurses, etc) on TCI - full weeklong and refresher trainings. 
  • Conducting mediation between staff members when issues professional issues arise impacting team members (same with youth mediation if necessary)
  • Manage and distribute finance/money for youth needs, recreation, and submit check-Requests for program needs while managing budget considerations. 
  • Provide weekly supervisor of YDC- both formal 1:1 and also in-Vivo Through observation. 
  • Develop in-service professional development geared towards YDC and deliver through team meetings. 
  • Respond to incidents by facilitating debriefings, assuring appropriate follow-up responses and updating Incident reports with appropriate information. 
  • Interview staff and youth should there be reason to 'investigate a matter'. Take copious notes and share finding with additional leaders of the program. RLS judgment, information and expertise plays a role in determining disciplinary action and even discharge. 
  • RLS are responsible for meeting with YDC staff to enforce the above. 
  • RLS are on-call to assure 24/7 coverage and are responsible for being the Admin on duty in the absence of coordinator or director. They make swift assessment, rely on sound judgement and direct the program in managing emergency and critical matters. 
  • RSL are members of the sanctuary core team and facilitate meetings; they are members of the FJS quarterly meetings and have informed the agenda and facilitated meetings. 
  • RLS interface with community partners (volunteers, You gotta believe, CANY) police, ACS, OCFS, etc and are expected to represent GSS in a professional manner and do so! 
  • RLS serve as leaders and administrators (not direct care) within the Residential Child Welfare programs. 
  • Coordinate activities for youth.
  • Supervise program and Youth Development staff.
  • Collaborate with supervisor regarding scheduling.
  • Coordinate and document group life reports.
  • Provide on-the-job training for youth development staff.
  • On call/Triage in response to crisis and scheduling.
  • Attend all mandatory program and agency meetings.
  • Participate in weekly program update with social service staff.
  • Monitor staff performance and communicate training needs to the Training Department.
  • Implement established policy relevant to problem solving techniques.
  • Lead the implementation of the Sanctuary Model of trauma-informed practice within the department/program.
  • Encourage and advance the use of the Sanctuary Model tools: safety plans, community meetings, psycho-educational groups, team meetings, red flag reviews, treatment planning conferences (or similar), and self-care in the department/program to create a non-violent and trauma-sensitive culture.
  • Promote and model the seven Sanctuary Model commitments to create a non-violent and trauma-sensitive culture.
  • Integrate the Sanctuary Model SELF (Safety, Emotional Management, Loss and Future) framework into daily practice to ensure quality care and an effective work environment.
  • Utilize Sanctuary Model principals in the supervisory practice.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma with 5 years working with adolescent youth.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree preferred with 3 years working with adolescent youth.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Proven client sensibility and ability to communicate with staff on all levels.
  • Demonstrated competence in verbal, written, organizational, and prioritization skills.
  • Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based, youth and family development and trauma-informed perspective.
  • Capability to transition easily between working independently with a high degree of self-initiative and contributing as part of a team.
  • Participate in creating a safe and therapeutic milieu.
  • Effective in conflict resolution and crisis intervention techniques and practices.
  • Must be able to successfully complete state mandated crisis intervention training, and perform physical restraint of a resident.
  • Must be able to successfully complete state mandated medication administration training.
  • Must be flexible to work during hours supervisees work (some evening, overnight and weekend and holiday hours).
  • Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based, youth and family development and trauma-informed perspective.
