Full Time, 8am - 4:30pm

General Summary

The Histotechnician performs histology and cytology preparation procedures on patient specimens submitted for the diagnoses of disease. The Histotechnician maintains specimen identity and integrity; produces high quality stained slides using standardized procedures to meet the Pathologist’s requirements for microscopic evaluation; and performs quality control and preventative maintenance according to established policy. The Histotechnician works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines. The Histotechnician interacts with patient populations from neonate to elderly; with patients of all types of illnesses.

1. Produces high quality slide results, according to standard operating procedures, to meet the pathologists’ requirements for microscopic evaluation. This includes routine H&E’s, special stains, frozen sections, FNA’s and cytology preparations

2. Recognizes and/or determines priority of laboratory requests to arrange workload and to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.

3. Provides coverage in absence of others to ensure availability of laboratory services at both facilities.

4. Requires no more than routine supervision of work performed, relative to amount of experience. Performs tasks according to standard operating procedures.

5. Maintains integrity and identity of specimen throughout each step of processing and slide preparation to produce accurate results. This includes accurately labeling requisitions, slides, cassettes and specimen containers.

6. Recognizes incomplete or inaccurate requisitions and/or inadequately labeled specimen containers. Takes required action to obtain needed information and documents such as per standard operating procedures.

7. Recognizes and under direction of supervisor attempts to resolve problems with stains, reagents, or quality control. Documents such actions according to standard operating procedure.

8. Assists in the collection, preparation and/or transportation of specimens using appropriate protocol for preservation to maximize specimen quality. This includes but is not limited to fine needle aspirations, fresh specimens for send out and cytology specimens.

9. Effectively communicates problems or other information to other team members, supervisor, director and pathologists in a timely manner. This includes, but is not limited to, notification of special tests such as frozen sections, questionable technical results, specimen discrepancies or problems, malfunctioning equipment and coverage issues. Documents such to provide optimal patient care.

Qualifications

Education & Training:

An HT (ASCP) or other nationally recognized certification or be eligible for certification of completion of a CLSI accredited Histotechnician program within the last 5 years prior to the date of application for examination or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry; or an Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry 

(Preferred) One-year full time experience in a histopathology laboratory within the past ten years.

Experience may be required based upon education and training. The incumbent may require up to 3 months of full-time detailed job orientation and training to gain specific capabilities to perform essential job functions.
