Summary:

The Center for the Advancement of Science Leadership and Culture (The Center) plays a key role in HHMI’s efforts to intentionally integrate equity and inclusion into research environments. By doing so, The Center will enhance diversity across key academic career stages. The Center serves as a source of expertise, collaboration, and strategic guidance on DEI to advance HHMI’s goals for the scientific workforce.

Our work focuses in these areas:

  • Inclusive Learning. Current and planned HHMI programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate level, in which academic faculty, administrators, and students transform the experience of science education.
  • Cultural Innovations. New HHMI programs and activities aimed at providing scientific professional development and other opportunities designed to improve how people experience the science ecosystem.
  • Equity-Centered Partnerships. Collaborative efforts to integrate HHMI’s commitment to DEI into the everyday practice of the Center, the Institute’s scientific research, and discovery science broadly.
  • Data Science, Research & Analytics. Exploratory activities to develop a deep understanding of the foundational practices to advancing equity in STEMM.

Research Scholars Training at HHMI

In 2021, HHMI announced a long-term commitment to advancing DEI goals through continued support of existing efforts as well as new initiatives. One of the newer initiatives is to create a research training program for individuals interested in gaining experience and training in biomedical research. The goal of the HHMI Research Scholars Training Program is to support diversity within the scientific workforce. This will be done by providing biomedical research training opportunities where recent graduates (including associate and bachelor’s degree earners) and science education faculty can further their development as scientists and prepare for next steps in their scientific career.

Core programmatic components of the HHMI Research Scholars Training Program will include:

  • Access to research opportunities in HHMI labs for recent graduates and science education faculty who have had limited access to such opportunities during their science careers.
  • Engagement of HHMI scientists and labs to provide supportive and inclusive training environments.
  • Support of the research scholars as they successfully transition to the next steps in their scientific career (including but not limited to biomedical PhD programs).

The Program Lead is the principal connection between the Research Scholars Training Program and its participants. They assist the participants in understanding the goals of the initiative, manage participant engagement in program activities, assess the participant progress, and will help evaluate program outcomes.

In addition to leadership of this program, the Program Lead will support the development of new equity-centered partnerships and provide ideas and perspectives to other Center initiatives. The Center is actively seeking and cultivating collaborations with leaders across the scientific ecosystem to address systemic inequities and design new models for science engagement and outreach. This position will be a key contributor to this effort.

What we provide:

  • A role that is positioned to have an impact across the broader scientific landscape because of its ability to cultivate and implement initiatives that expand training and leadership models with and for scientists.

  • Build the curriculum for the professional development activities, designing for the various audiences that will be supported by the program.
  • Create an advising approach to support program participants throughout their tenure in the program.
  • Ensure programmatic alignment and partnership across HHMI’s programs, including the Gilliam Fellowship, Hanna H. Gray Fellowship, and Cultural Innovations teams.
  • Develop positive relationships with key partners, including lab heads, lab staff, and other support staff to address programmatic issues as they arise.
  • Support to the growth strategy for the program and for the Equity-Centered Partnerships portfolio, including forecasting new or emerging populations that could benefit from the program and leveraging relationships as opportunities to co-design and co-create with institutional partners to expand access to inclusive research training environments within the biomedical sciences.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the program.
  • Travel occasionally to potential research sites for lab engagement, conferences and other convenings for recruitment, and additional activities as needed.

  • Ph.D. degree or equivalent degree in STEM, preferably in a natural science.
  • Experience with instruction and conducting research, preferably in biomedical or life sciences as a faculty member.
