Department
BSD PED - Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics
About the Department
In the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago, we strive to provide the highest level of complex care for children from diagnosis and treatment to conducting research to find promising new therapies with a focus on teaching. We are committed to advancing the frontiers of knowledge, and the education and training of future clinical pediatricians, subspecialists, educators, clinical investigators and physician-scientists. The Department of Pediatrics is a dynamic, stimulating place to work, and because we are focused on growth and improved excellence, our staff have particularly challenging and rewarding roles.
The Section of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics strives to become a Center of Excellence in the complex diagnosis and management for diverse disabilities with origin in childhood, which include children with motor, communicative, sensory, developmental, genetic, neurological, learning, behavior, and feeding disorders. The Section plays important roles in supporting children who are survivors of neonatal intensive care and pediatric intensive care critical illness. As coordinated family-centered population health care is the transforming principle for future health financing initiatives, the Section is uniquely positioned to address care coordination, management pathways, and collaboration with community providers to advance both the quality and value of efforts to improve outcomes for vulnerable child disability populations with a spectrum of developmental and behavioral disorders.
The University of Chicago Medicine REACT Program is a Community Treatment & Services Center in the National Child Traumatic Stress Network that provides services to patients and families affected by community violence.
Job Summary
The REACT Program Outreach Manager will provide outreach and information about program services in a variety of UCM and community settings in order to raise awareness about the REACT Program and to recruit facilitators of and participants in community-based programming.
The REACT Program Outreach Manager will work closely with program leadership on design, training, recruitment, and implementation of two innovative program models: MANifest and Talk, Touch & Listen.
MANifest (Cartman, n.d.) is an African-centered workshop series for Black boys and men (ages 14-24) modeled in the cultural traditions of west African rites of passage. Participants attend 12 weekly groups, the primary aims of which are to enhance self-awareness, facilitate critical analysis of messages about Black manhood and historical trauma, and increase mental health literacy.
Talk, Touch & Listen While Combing Hair (TT&L; Lewis, 2015) is a community-based Parent Café curriculum and caregiver/child group developed by Dr. Marva Lewis. TT&L is a strengths-based brief intervention that strengthens caregiver-child relationships via observations of hair-combing interactions. TT&L uses a train-the-trainer model based on two decades of research on parent-child interaction during hair combing routines, and trauma of colorism in relationships with child and community.
The REACT Outreach Manager is responsible for implementing administrative activities of the program, including working with the Project Director to track all program services and activities, data collection, and program evaluation; coordinating grant-related meetings and phone conferences; coordinating the UCM REACT Family Advisory Board; and grant reporting to SAMHSA, as required. This includes administering SAMHSA surveys and satisfaction surveys to program participants, coordinating and tracking the administration of these surveys by other REACT staff, and compiling survey results for the purpose of grant reporting and program evaluation.
This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.
