The Department of Pathology employs 125 faculty with diverse expertise from basic science to the practice of human and veterinary medicine, broadly focused on the study, diagnosis and treatment of disease and training the next generation of healthcare and scientific professionals. 

Nature of work:

The Department of Pathology seeks a full-time Faculty member (Assistant, Associate Professor) whose primary role will be to serve as the department's Pathologist Informatician. Applicants should be board certified or board eligible in anatomic and/or clinical pathology. Applicants should be board certified or board eligible in clinical informatics. Applicants that have completed a pathology informatics fellowship or have substantial equivalent academic informatics experience will also be considered.

The Pathologist Informatics Specialist (Informatician) will collaborate with pathologists and staff at professional, technical and administrative levels to provide informatics support for the anatomic pathology, molecular diagnostics, and cytogenetics laboratories that are owned and operated by the University of Colorado School of Medicine Department of Pathology. Additionally, the pathologist Informatician will support informatics efforts for the clinical pathology laboratory services at the University of Colorado Hospital. Candidates with additional fellowship training or sub specialization will have an opportunity to practice in other areas of interest. This position is full time, academic, and requires on site work based at the Anschutz Medical Campus, Aurora, CO.

The Pathologist Informatician duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide leadership in all phases of the information systems lifecycle, including management, change control, evaluation and improvement of existing systems and selection and implementation of new systems.
  • Ensure that the Department's laboratory information systems and information technology meet regulatory requirements of accrediting agencies, affiliated hospital systems, and the University of Colorado including security of software and hardware systems.
  • Apply data standards for storing laboratory and pathology information required by the College of American Pathologists and other regulatory and accrediting bodies
  • Guide or perform evaluation, implementation and validation of digital imaging systems such as whole slide imaging, telepathology and digital image analysis software
  • Collaborate closely with LIS, IT, laboratory, integrated practice and departmental staff as well as departmental leadership and administration to ensure fidelity and security of data, mining and analysis of data, compliance and quality of data and departmental medical practice
  • Work closely with the UCHealth CMIO and their clinical informatics teams, as well as departmental Vice Chair of Administration/DFA and IT faculty and staff to address system-level laboratory informatics needs and projects
  • Promote an environment of continuous improvement in laboratory information systems and information technology for the Department of Pathology, CU Medicine, the School of Medicine and affiliated hospital systems.

Regular participation as an attending for one or more clinical services of the department is required and will be based on the Pathologist Informatician' s interests and departmental needs. The successful candidate will have principal responsibility for the education of pathology residents in informatics and is also expected to contribute to scholarly presentations, publications, editorial works and independent research activities.

Employment Expectations:

  • 50% Pathology Informatics Specialist leader of the Department of Pathology
  • 30% Regular participation as an attending for one or more clinical services of the department based on the Pathologist Informatician’ s interests and departmental needs. This may include frozen section service or call depending on the nature of the clinical service.
  • 10% Engage in teaching activities, including development and delivery of a pathology informatics elective for residents, teaching of informatics in the resident didactic lecture series, and other trainee education as required. This may also include service on educational and program review committees representing pathology informatics.
  • 10% Engage in scholarship, as broadly defined in the matrix of the University of Colorado School of Medicine. You are not expected to acquire external funding, however, you may participate in funded research and also apply for pilot funding through Department of Pathology programs.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Assistant Professor

  • Medical degree (M.D. or D.O.)
  • The successful candidate must be board certified in Anatomic Pathology and/or Clinical Pathology in addition to being Clinical Informatics board certified/board eligible or have completed a Pathology Informatics fellowship or have attained the equivalent experience to a fellowship in an academic setting.

Associate Professor:

  • Medical degree (M.D. or D.O.)
  • The successful candidate must be board certified in Anatomic Pathology and/or Clinical Pathology in addition to being Clinical Informatics board certified/board eligible or have completed a Pathology Informatics fellowship and have at least 6 years of experience in academic Pathology Informatics service. Clinical, teaching and scholarship accomplishments sufficient for an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, regular (tenure eligible) track is required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Assistant Professor 

At least one year post-informatics fellowship practice experience is strongly desired. Additional fellowships in other areas of clinical or anatomic pathology, in addition to informatics, may be favored if a good fit for departmental clinical practice.

Additional undergraduate or graduate degrees or experience in computing, big data analysis, security, management of IT staff, and other related areas will be considered positively towards recruitment.

Associate Professor:

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Assistant Professor - $210,000 to $250,000

Associate Professor - $235,000 to $290,000

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
