In this role, you will leverage your knowledge of the thrift business to effectively execute and quickly adapt strategies to ensure operational excellence, merchandising execution, maximum productivity, profitable sales and earnings growth. You will be joining a highly motivated mission-driven organization. You will drive high performance across all initiatives and ensure consistency within your region as measured by company goals and KPIs that drive a profitable retail division. You will lead, develop, coach, and inspire a region of stores to deliver an optimal customer, donor, and employee experience. Your goal is to lead execution and support the brand and enterprise vision, ensuring your managers are delivering results and holding their store teams accountable.

Essential Functions: Describe the duties that define the core responsibilities of the job. 

PERFORMANCE AND OPERATIONS

  • Drive profitable sales in the Metro (NYC, Brooklyn, Long Island and Westchester) region through effective business analysis; identifying financial opportunities and developing action plans to address current/future business challenges and deliver desired results within assigned region.
  • Deliver sales/profit plan, ADC/ donation & mini shop donor targets and other KPIs for the region in conjunction with annual performance objectives.
  • Support SVP of Retail in delivering strategic goals and objectives to create a profitable retail business.
  • Drive an operational excellence mindset within the Metro region; identifying best practices and opportunities to improve efficiency through consistent assessments of production layout, adherence to production processes, integrity in data reporting, ensuring product turnover(pulls) leading the execution of process improvements.
  • Drive Metro region Ecommerce sales by holding store teams accountable to execution of all Ecommerce initiatives supporting the overall performance of the Ecommerce business.
  • Lead compliance to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), policies and process creating consistency across the region.
  • Provide feedback to SVP of Retail on sales and KPI results, field issues, action plans and tactics to quantify progress compared to pre-established goals.
  • Own the P&L performance for stores within the Metro region implementing efficient management of costs to maximize profitability of the overall portfolio.
  • Identify future business needs and implement strategies to enhance brand performance.
  • Ensure adherence to established payroll budget and expense management.
  • Actively seeks new ways/methods to improve store productivity. 
  • Ensure Store Managers are cultivating a customer/donor centric environment.
  • Promote Store Managers’ awareness of their local market and competitors, building their capacity to respond to market changes and promote a unique Goodwill experience. 
  • Partner with Risk Management to lead implementation of new policies and adherence to proper engagement and reporting of loss prevention/security and safety issues; responsible for training/re-training on all Cash handling opportunities on a rolling basis and/or as issues are identified ensuring all safety issues are corrected upon notice by the VP of Health and Safety.
  • Each month, complete the store audit form for each store in your portfolio; review findings with the SVP Global Retail and implement actions to correct highlighted opportunities.
  • Each month, facilitate a store visit recap discussion with store management teams to review audit results and develop timebound action plans to address opportunities. 
  • Lead execution of the Metro region donation acquisition strategies.
  • Manage vendor relationships within the Metro region specific to landscaping, cleaning, and snow removal in partnership with facilities organization. 
  • Review store requests for product, equipment, and supplies, adhere to operations protocol for transporting inventory from the warehouse to stores/sites, and reinforce protocol and constructive engagement with the warehouse among store teams. 
  • Continually assess store layouts, fixture quantity and placement by category, to promote a shoppable space and implement merchandising strategies that will maximize sales per square foot. 
  • Make connections in DGR to the Goodwill Mission through participation on inter-departmental teams, Round Up fundraising, hosting tours for donors, and being a Goodwill ambassador.

LEADERSHIP, TALENT, AND CULTURE – Person Centered 

  • Responsible for the performance management and engagement of a well-trained, highly diverse store leadership team that will support the growth and succession needs of the enterprise.
  • Mentor and coach leaders to identify solutions and develop their managerial skills.
  • Develop and hold store teams accountable to location specific staffing model based on it’s unique attributes e.g. donation volume, physical layout.
  • Partner with HR to identify skill gaps and opportunities for staff development.
  • Lead resolution and mitigation of all employee relation issues partnering with HR and key stakeholders as needed.
  • Attract, develop, and fuel a talent pipeline in support of the region and brand talent strategy; utilizing the Retail Onboarding plan to drive a positive employee experience.
  • Create an environment committed to building succession and developing talent through coaching and feedback.
  • Inspire and coach Store Leadership to consistently demonstrate behaviors that result in high employee morale, customer and donor engagement driving the attainment of aggressive sales goals.
  • Responsible for the culture within the Metro region, mirroring the one cultivated within the Retail department.
  • Ability to bring about strategic change, both within and outside the organization, to meet organizational goals.
  • Actively engage in supporting the overall performance and culture in stores through collaboration with SVP/RVPs on specified store resets, driving operational excellence/financial growth/bench strength development by sharing/implementing regional best practices across the fleet and providing peer-to-peer feedback on teams as needed.
  • Actively participate in global initiatives/projects to drive the Brand forward contributing value-adding insight and perspectives.
  • Model a philanthropic mindset within the region to drive awareness and community engagement.

Qualifications: Describe the minimum educational and experience requirements/preferences.

Who You Are

  • Minimum 7-10 years with a fast-moving specialty retailer or a national consumer goods company, preferably in apparel, fashion, footwear.
  • Minimum 7-10 years cross-functional management experience.
  • Minimum 7-10 years managing a team.
  • Minimum 5 years working in a store environment.
  • Leadership maturity: ability to inspire and command respect, bringing a sense of calm to the teams in order create a collaborative work environment.
  • In-depth experience in relationship management.
  • Superb communication and influencing skills.

Skills Required: Describe the minimum skills required or preferred

  • Leadership experience overseeing district, multiunit or high-volume business.
  • Strong business acumen and proven track record of leading, adjusting and developing business strategies to achieve profit & loss results.
  • Keen awareness of the marketplace inclusive of Goodwill NYNJ, external competitors, and overall retail trends.
  • Proven track record of success in merchandising strategy implementation and broad knowledge of fashion brands.
  • Ability to embrace challenges, take risks, learn fast and influence change to lead execution of strategic initiatives through others while managing competing priorities.
  • Able to travel overnight and/or between stores as required.
