Aviation Ground Support Equipment Manager

The Aviation GSE, Manager will be based at one of the Amentum sites in Iraq and serve the Operations and Maintenance Support Services (OMSS) contract in support of the U.S. Department of State. This position will be responsible for performing heavy vehicle/equipment maintenance and repairs and will report to the Vehicle Maintenance Manager. The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all inclusive.

DUTIES:

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
  • Comply with all Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Provide information and materials to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on airport ground support equipment such as tugs, vehicles, belt loader, air conditioning units, air start units, ground power units, forklifts and cargo loaders in a timely manner.
  • Manage a team of technicians, ensuring that their performance meets the company safety, quality, and efficiency standards.
  • Inspect and maintain ground support equipment used in airline and cargo operations.
  • Troubleshoot, repair and/or overhaul ground support equipment.
  • Diagnose problems using test equipment and applicable manuals.
  • Build and assemble machines or mechanical components according to requirements.
  • Inspect machines, engines, transmissions etc.
  • Run diagnostic tests to discover functionality issues.
  • Conduct repairs aiming for maximum reliability.
  • Perform thorough maintenance on machinery, equipment and systems.
  • Clean and apply lubricants to machinery components.
  • Replenish fluids and components of engines and machinery.
  • Managing purchasing to maintain stock levels.
  • Maintaining an inventory of spare parts.
  • Provide consultation on correct maintenance and preventative measures to machine or vehicle users.
  • Determine stock needs and order/maintain replacement parts and supplies.
  • Supervise and schedule daily work assignments for GSE team.
  • Be responsible for tracking and completion of work orders (WO) produced by the Fleetmate database & GMMS system.
  • Participate in equipment inventories.
  • Keep tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.
  • Complete records, maintains tools and equipment, and perform various clean-up activities.
  • Observe and follow all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment.
  • Keep logs of work and report on issues.
  • Completion of GSE paperwork as required.
  • Mentor and supervise department technicians.
  • Track and document preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Have a role in warehouse operations.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.

REQUIRED:

  • Minimum Acceptable Experience Level: Have 4 – 6 years of GSE mechanical verified experience or 5 – 8 years heavy mechanical experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of ground support equipment repairs and maintenance.
  • Have a minimum of two years of supervisorial experience.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to lift heavy parts and equipment.
  • Methods and tools used in repair and maintenance of heavy vehicles/equipment, including diesel engines, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
  • Have great working knowledge of diesel, gas engines and various transmissions.
  • Have a great working knowledge of electrical systems.
  • Have a great working knowledge of hydraulic systems.
  • Excellent troubleshooting ability.
  • Basic ability and understanding of record keeping and work order system procedures.
  • Working knowledge of diagnostic software as it relates to general automotive fleet and heavy vehicle equipment.
  • First-hand experience dealing with OEMs and third-party maintenance providers.
  • Basic computer skills using Microsoft Windows Office Suite applications and computerized fleet work order systems.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions related to maintenance of heavy equipment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English.
  • Ability to operate and drive a variety of heavy vehicles and equipment.
  • Understand, diagnose, and repair/troubleshoot modern electrical systems, including computerized engine, transmission and brake systems.
  • Use mechanic tools and diagnostic equipment with skill and safety.
  • Plan, organize, assign, and coordinate the work of assigned staff.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance or required duties.
  • Ability to read Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Technical Manuals.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes involved in supporting equipment functions at an overseas facility.
  • Must be flexible, determined to succeed and very self-motivated.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that requires handling multiple tasks at a given time and rapidly adapting to changing priorities and schedules.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with a demonstrated commitment to safety and a successful track record of safety management in the aviation industry.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity with an international perspective.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to become an active and functioning member of a team.

  • Expert communication skills to facilitate and disseminate information.
  • Must be able to work a variety of assigned shifts including evenings and weekends. Subject to emergency call-in.
  • Education: A high school diploma or GED.
  • Passport, Licenses and Certifications:
  • As part of pre-contingency requirements, by the time the visa process starts, candidates must possess a valid passport of home country with a minimum of 18 months remaining to expiration date with 8 blank pages.
  • Valid drivers’ and truck driver’s license from Home of Record.
  • Security Vetting: Already possess a US Government issued security clearance or Moderate Risk Public Trust (MRPT) or be able to obtain a favorable MRPT certification or US Government clearance prior to being hired is required for the position. Must maintain eligibility at the required certification or clearance level for the duration of the contract.
  • Language Skills: Satisfactory English proficiency to meet job requirements and to adhere and comply with safety, health, and security measures.
  • Citizenship: Must be eligible for US Government Clearance.
  • Medical: Successfully complete and pass the medical and dental examinations as required by Amentum and our customer for deployment to Iraq. Must maintain physical and dental requirements for duration of deployment.

DESIRED:

  • Relevant overseas automotive mechanical experience.
  • Technical certifications or licenses related to GSE maintenance are essential.
  • Hands-on experience working with equipment manufacturers such as TLD, International, JBT, JCB, Trepel and Volvo.
  • Hands on experience working with small equipment manufacturers such as Honda, Briggs, Subaru and Kubota.
  • Experience working with TMOS/AWOS weather systems.
  • Previous out of home country experience is highly desirable and previous work experience in harsh environmental conditions a plus. 
  • Experience working with Amentum.

WORKING AND LIVING CONDITIONS:

This position may be located in a war zone, in an environment with harsh and dangerous working and living conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may regularly be exposed to extreme and austere desert-like environment. Temperatures can reach 120- 130 degrees Fahrenheit/50-55 degrees Celsius during the summer months. Employees must be willing and able to perform regular job requirements in this austere, extreme environment, as well as willing and able to deploy to Iraq for extended periods. Work schedules are a minimum of 6 days per week and 10 hours per day, while some jobs have higher daily and weekly minimums. Employees must be willing and able to perform physical activities including, but not limited to, heavy lifting and moving of items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum; climbing in and out of equipment; crawling; and working outdoors. This includes being able to lift and carry 40 pounds of personal protective equipment for extended periods of time and being capable of running and ‘duck & cover’ during emergencies without putting oneself or others at risk.
