The virtual machine monitor group is responsible for the core CPU virtualization technology used in all VMware products. You will have the opportunity to work with bleeding edge CPU technology, VT-x/AMD-V, interrupt virtualization, memory virtualization/management, and virtualization of other forms of compute technologies and accelerators.

In VMware’s Cloud Platform business unit, we are working to build products and solutions that power the hybrid cloud. You will get to work with our largest customers to define the next generation of industry-leading cloud platform. You'll work with highly motivated and very smart engineers. You will drive new initiatives around software appliances, streamlined delivery of software-defined data center components to on premise and public clouds, and explore solutions for Hyper-Converged Infrastructure market. The Monitor Group is part of our Cloud Infrastructure Business Group which is responsible for our Core Virtualization Infrastructure.

The Monitor Team engineering responsibilities span across multiple areas that improve our guest platform support.

In the first 6 months, you will be expected to get up to speed with one of the specialization areas, such as new CPU feature enablement, confidential computing, modernization of the monitor architecture, memory management, hardware accelerators, legacy and precision timekeeping. By year 1 you would be expected to have impactful source code contributions and enhancements in your area of specialization.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

This role requires you to possess a deep understanding of processor architecture and low-level OS kernel internals, system software including memory management, resource management, and interrupt architecture.

You will work independently and as a member of a team of software engineers to design and deliver features in support of new processors or a proposed enhancement for the virtual machine monitor architecture. As an example, you might be involved in the design and implementation of upcoming CPU instruction set updates in a virtualization context. Similarly, you may be assigned to contribute on an aspect of memory virtualization/management features as part of a monitor modernization effort. For staff and more senior roles you would be expected to make proposals that help define the design roadmap, or drive a technical effort leading other engineers.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

You will be joining as a Monitor Engineer as part of the Virtual Machine Monitor Team at VMWare. The Monitor Team develops the leading-edge CPU virtualization capabilities for VMWare's vSphere server virtualization product. This team is a collaborative team where you will have the opportunity to interact with different groups within the team, as well as other teams working on the ESXi operating system. You will lead your part within the projects, as well as frequently be given the opportunity to present your work to others and learn about the novel work of other engineers.

This job may require the candidate to travel and/or work from a facility that requires full vaccination prior to entry.
