Summary of Duties and Responsibilities: 

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Iowa State University invites candidates to apply for a three-year assistant teaching professorship. The successful candidate will teach a 3/3 load. The six courses will include sections of Moral Theory and Practice as well as sections of Moral Problems in Medicine. Moral Theory and Practice is an introductory level course in moral philosophy that integrates issues related to business. The successful candidate will have latitude in developing the course, including deciding how to engage business students. (The department is committed to in-person teaching.) Moral Problems in Medicine is an intermediate-level course that addresses central moral problems arising in medicine. Again, the successful candidate will have latitude in developing the course. Given projected needs, preference will also be given to candidates who can teach sections of Ethics of Technology. Opportunities for additional (online) Summer or Winter teaching might be available. The successful candidate will also perform modest service. The three-year contract may be renewed following a successful review and continuing need of the program. ISU provides opportunities for advancement to the rank of Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor (the last of which includes five-year contracts). The successful candidate will join a supportive with a small and engaged major and a broad impact through its popular course offerings. As a member of a very strong teaching department, the successful candidate should provide an effective learning experience for undergraduate students. Teaching faculty are fully integrated into the department with voting rights on all matters, save for a few such as the granting of tenure. The department, college, and university all support professional development and engagement with the discipline. 

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship. 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

MA in philosophy or related area 

Preferred Qualifications:

Teaching experience (as instructor of record or teaching assistant) in philosophy or related area 

Evidence of teaching effectiveness

PhD or equivalent by the time of appointment 

Qualified and able to teach sections of Moral Theory and Practice

Qualified and able to teach sections of Moral Problems of Medicine

Qualified and able to teach sections of Ethics of Technology
