The opportunity:

Leonardo Cyber Division is seeking a Principal Networks Engineer to act as the subject matter expert and arbitrator on design issues relating to networks, gateways and the security enforcing functions applied to these system and service components.

We are therefore looking to recruit a seasoned IT Network Engineer with proven mastery of networks, who wishes to broaden their experience in a complex and sensitive intelligence environments across Cloud / Hybrid and On Premise projects

The Principal Networks Engineer will need to build strong relationships with the other senior engineering leads within the IPT and Division, as well as with customer/user stakeholders and third parties on whom we depend to achieve end-to-end service delivery.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience of performing a Principal Networks Engineer, and preferably working in a secure environment. You will possess a strong all round technical ability with an excellent working knowledge of networks capability across area for Cloud / Hybrid and on premise network and systems infrastructure technologies. An awareness of cyber security capabilities is advantageous. You will need to have a good working knowledge of building, implementing and maintaining systems with complex architectures on client site, with on-going proactive operational support, working closely with key stakeholders and end users. Working within a specialist skilled engineering team providing 1st to 3rd line support to the client.

Projects will be from the full systems engineering lifecycle from Concept Exploration through to In-Service Support providing the opportunity to develop your experience while supporting the requirements management, system architecture and design, subsystem design and development, system integration, test and acceptance and specialist technical support.

What you’ll do as a Principal Network Engineer:

As a Principal Networks Engineer within the Cyber Division, you will typically be working as part of a larger team including the design, development and testing of secure systems, including but not limited to, Information Management Systems, Command and Control systems, Security Monitoring of IT, IoT and CNI systems and services.

These roles will have the ability to take ownership / implement the DevOps side of the engineering delivery of one or more work packages, including the planning, estimation, execution and progress reporting of own workload and that of other team members.

Key Responsibility Areas:

The Principal Networks Engineer will be a member of a specialised engineering practice within the Platform team with the work executed within IPTs for the ongoing systems engineering efforts across multiple active projects and managed services. The candidate should be comfortable working on multiple systems engineering lifecycle phases including architectural design, detailed system/subsystem design, implementation, testing and complex problem resolution as part of through life support.

In addition, this Principal Networks Engineer will be required to engage directly in projects, work within secure facilities and network operations rooms and produce deliverable artefacts in the delivery of contracted projects and services. These will include:

  • Development of network solution designs to meet a complex mix of customer requirements;
  • Contributing to architectural documentation as part of high and low level system designs
  • Providing technical guidance and mentoring for other system engineers and technical architects;
  • Preparation and participation in key technical review events during the systems development life-cycle;
  • Technical stakeholder engagement with clients, peers, 3rd party delivery partners and vendors as required;
  • Providing technical support to the Senior Management Team for all business development activities.
  • You will also be responsible for keeping technical awareness up-to-date with updates in industry including:
  • Keeping up to date with evolving networking technology to support technology/solution selection;
  • Keeping up to date with available qualifications and certifications available for network technology utilised across all systems;
  • Keeping up to date with relevant industry standards, policies, methodologies and frameworks;
  • Keeping up to date with relevant customer preferred/mandated standards, policies, methodologies and frameworks.

And performing a lead role in governance and best practice including:

  • Providing specialist network technical support to meetings such as Project Review Meetings, Capability
  • Working Group Meetings and Security Working Groups as required;
  • Performing a lead management role in Continual Service Improvement activities for processes, procedures and working practices utilised by the business unit.

What we need from you:

The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience within a systems engineering or IT solution delivery role, and preferably working in a secure environment. You will possess a strong all round technical ability with an excellent working knowledge of network and systems infrastructure technologies. An awareness of cyber security capabilities is advantageous.

You really must have:

  • The role absolutely requires the candidate to be a sole UK National with a current DV clearance
  • Significant experience of Network deployment for LAN / WAN and Data Centres.
  • Solid understanding of the OSI and TCP/IP models.
  • Networking cabling expertise including Fibre, Copper Ethernet, and configuration as well as networking hardware installation.
  • Strong knowledge of network security, not least covering Next Generation and Web Application firewalls.
  • Deep understanding of networking protocols and technologies (e.g., IPsec, HSRP, BGP, OSPF, QoS, MPLS, VoIP, etc.).
  • Network design knowledge and experience (HLD/LLD).
  • Cisco certification (minimum CCNA).
  • Hands-on experience with monitoring, network diagnostic and network analytics tools.
  • Understanding of cloud technologies and concepts.
  • Mastery of Networking services and components including:
  • Local and Wide Area Networking
  • Cisco networking to CCNP level
