About the position:

This position will be based out of Sprague’s Portsmouth, NH office. (Some level of hybrid work can be considered). Local, New England area candidates preferred.

Sprague is looking for a Business Intelligence and Data Intern for Summer 2024 to support the Retail Natural Gas and Electricity Business Operations team. We are seeking upbeat and energetic candidates with excellent communication skills, who thrive on challenges and are excited about the idea of working in a high growth, fast-paced organization in the energy sector. The intern(s) will work with assigned supervisors / subject experts from the Retail Business Operations and Analytics team and will interact with other members of the Retail Energy BU team as well as present project results and receive feedback from the management team.

We are looking for candidates with a strong interest and academic background in Business Analytics, Data Analytics and Data Science with multidisciplinary skills across Business, Economics, Finance and Statistical analysis. The ideal candidate should also be eager to learn more about the challenges facing the energy markets and have a desire to develop their skills and solve problems in the energy industry as a career path.

The successful candidate will develop and apply skills in business intelligence (BI), data visualization, data modeling, data management, data process automations, data governance and data solutions architecture on prem and in the cloud environment and other business and data analytics areas, while learning from and supporting energy industry professionals and contributing towards the Sprague Retail Energy BU goals. Interns might also be required to independently analyze and propose solutions for specific business problems.

Anticipated / potential project areas:

  • Capture, streamlining and storing of structured and unstructured data from various business and industry sources.
  • BI reports, dashboards, KPIs and related BI catalogs.
  • Data models, Metadata layers, Data markets and related catalogs
  • Data mgmt. scripts and code version controls and catalogs.
  • Data mgmt. process optimizations
  • Data and BI related business requirements and data architecture solutions support.
  • Business analytics tools
  • Business processes automations
  • Providing other support to Retail Energy Business Operations and Analytics teams.

Education and Skills:

  • Advancing towards a bachelor’s degree (Junior/Senior) or a master’s degree with some combination of majors, minors, and concentrations in: Business Analytics, Data Analytics, Data Science, Economics, Finance, Business, Statistics, etc.
  • Knowledge of Business Intelligence (BI) tools, like Power BI, Tableau, QuickSight, etc
  • Knowledge of Data Modeling, Data Mgmt, Data Layers, Data Schemas.
  • Some level of knowledge of cloud BI and Data analytics environment (AWS, Azure, etc). Experience in developing data and business analytics in AWS is a plus.
  • Experience creating dashboards and visualizations and KPIs.
  • Some exposure and knowledge of relational databases (SQL, etc)
  • Some programming and development experience in Python, SQL, GitHub, etc.
  • Good quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Interest in the Energy Industry including energy sustainability and transition topics.
  • Strong drive to learn and make the most out of this internship opportunity and in energy as a career path.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, attention to details and accuracy, while able to see the bigger picture.
  • Ability to solve problems and conduct research as needed; see projects through to fruition.
  • Strong communication and collaborations skills.
  • Following the highest standards of ethics and respect for individuals and work environment is a must.
  • Ability to cover various tasks from supporting with data preparation and modeling to independent research, development, analysis and modeling work and results presentations.
