Sprague is looking for a Quantitative Analysis Intern (Statistical Analysis Track) for Summer 2024. This position will support the Quant. Analysis and Portfolio Mgmt. team within Sprague’s Retail Natural Gas and Electricity BU in the areas of statistical analysis and forecasting.

We are seeking upbeat and energetic candidates with excellent communication and collaboration skills, who thrive on challenges and are excited about the idea of working in a high growth, fast-paced organization in the energy sector. The intern(s) will work with assigned supervisors / subject experts from the Quant. Analysis and Portfolio Mgmt. team and will interact with other members of the Retail Energy BU teams as well as present project results and receive feedback from the management team.

This position will be based out of our Portsmouth, NH office (Hybrid is an option).

A successful intern candidate will develop and apply skills in various areas of statistical analysis (like feature selection, (de)trending, forecasting, sampling, univariate and multivariate probability distributions modeling, etc), while supporting and learning from energy industry professionals in the areas of energy markets, retail natural gas and electricity products and services, data science, analytics, forecasting, modeling business and product risks, portfolio and asset optimization, risk management and economic analysis.

The Intern will also learn about and contribute to building, cleaning, testing, and working with various databases, data processes and quantitative analysis models, tools, and applications. (on prem and cloud)

Potential project areas:

  • Data exploratory analysis as part of each project.
  • Data quality validation and cleaning (utilizing advanced statistical techniques and tools).
  • Weather probability distributions and weather scenarios modeling (temperature, HDD, etc)
  • Weather/temperature trends forecasting and analysis.
  • Customers’ energy usage / load: forecasting, joint probability distributions and trend analytics (Next days; Future months and years).
  • Pool / portfolio balancing risk diversification analysis.
  • Extracting weather factors and seasonality from commodity price time series.
  • Support the Quantitative analysis team in various projects as required by the business.

Qualified candidates for this role will have the following:

  • Education: Progressing towards Master’s (or applied PHD) in Statistics, or recent graduates looking to learn and apply their skills in the Energy industry.
  • Candidates from other quantitative majors like Econometrics, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, etc., with extensive advanced coursework in statistics will be considered.
  • Advanced knowledge of various supervised and unsupervised Machine Learning (ML) models.
  • Passionate for applying advanced statistics and quantitative skills in a business environment to create and drive business and customers insights, decisions, actions and added value.
  • Advanced programming and model deployment skills in languages like R, Python, MATLAB,
  • Advanced data manipulation (SQL, Python, etc), data modeling and data cleaning
  • Some exposure to cloud computing and machine learning applications in cloud environments like AWS will be a plus.
  • Ability to solve complex problems and conduct research as needed; see projects through to
  • Strong interest in learning about the energy markets and as a potential career path.
