SUMMARY

The Scientific Grant Writer will be responsible for all aspects of grant proposal development and submission including engaging with investigators to identify potential funding opportunities, assist with the writing and editing of proposals, track the progress of proposals, and prepare supporting documentation and reports to meet grant guidelines. Funders include private, federal, state, and corporate partners. The Scientific Grant Writer will assist with identifying funding opportunities and engage both internal and external resources throughout the pre-award and development process, while adhering to the vision and mission of Connecticut Children's.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Continually identify new funding sources to meet funding priorities, and evaluate viability of funding announcements
  • Communicate effectively, and on an ongoing basis, with potential grant sources, including foundations, corporations, government funding agencies, philanthropy, and individuals
  • Establish and manage a comprehensive process for timely and accurate grant evaluation, quality assessment, project and program fulfillment, and reporting to funders
  • Manage grant proposal development, including providing scientific expertise to the development and writing of grant proposals, establishing process timelines, communicating with agency program officers, and participating in educational grant webinars
  • Work with physicians, PhD-investigators, trainees, health-system leadership, staff, and community members to identify program needs and facilitate the development of innovative, comprehensive, and potentially grant-fundable programs that meet the mission of the organization
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

Education Required: Master's degree required.

Experience Required: Minimum of five years of experience in grant writing, preferably within an academic health center, university, or hospital, or relevant equivalent work experience. Training and experience with scientific writing.

Experience Preferred: Experience with securing support from federal and state agencies, foundations, and philanthropists preferred. Proven track record of procuring funding would be advantageous.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Write, prepare, and edit scientific grant proposals

Proficiency in Windows, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint and Excel), and citation software such as Endnote

Preferably skilled in the development of publication quality figures and graphs

Complex scientific information, theories, and practices

SKILLS:

Excellent written skills, including the ability to accurately communicate complex scientific theories to a variety of audiences.

Proficient in grammar, punctuating, editing, and proofreading

Astute listener with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with diverse groups of professionals

Must be organized, methodical, and detail-oriented with excellent time management skills

ABILITY TO:

Be flexible, adaptable, and able to read and research prior scientific publications

Work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities with competing deadlines

Successfully work independently as well as thrive in a goal-oriented, dynamic, team based environment

Find creative solutions and make good decisions based on experience and analysis

Ability to establish rapport with key players, and work under pressure with team to meet deadlines

Work after hours and travel, as needed

Produce proposals of the highest quality

Must be self-driven, flexible, and goal-oriented
