Although the position is housed in the ME department, the scope of research associated with this position covers the entire university. The work is focused around material science and engineering at the micro and nanoscale.

What You'll Do

The Associate Researcher will work with teams of undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, faculty, and has interactions with outside collaborators, operate the newly acquired state-of-the-art integrated Raman-AFM-SNOM-TERS-Lifetime system by WITec Instruments Corp. (Alpha 300R+ Raman system), iNano Nanoindenter, JPK force microscope, and Leica laser scanning confocal microscope. Job responsibilities include performing specialized laboratory experiments, providing input into research design, problem solving, data analysis, the writing of scientific reports and other material (making presentations), and managing laboratory operations, including building and maintaining a user base. The Associate Researcher is also responsible for ensuring appropriate calibrations, quality control of the instrument, and general maintenance of the equipment. 

Candidates may supplement their basic salary with other grant-based work.

Essential Functions:

  • Laboratory research: Provide input into research design for facility users and collaborators. Execute research projects - analyze, interpret, and summarize associated data. Trouble-shoot as needed; suggest next steps. Operating the lab equipment for a number of users and projects. Work on the expansion of the user’s base. Actively search for potential users. Make presentations for potential users.
  • Laboratory operations: Identify and establish standard research protocols for lab. Ensure lab safety compliance in lab; oversee appropriate calibrations, quality control of the instrument, and maintenance of the instrument. Occasional training and instruction after 2 initial years of position.
  • Writing/organization of material: Write study proposals, test plans, and summaries of research results of research projects, prepare materials for submission of papers, grants, presentations, book chapters, building and maintaining a user base.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

Ph.D in the area related to material science and engineering at the micro and nanoscale (MS degree can be considered in exceptionally qualified cases).

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in engineering or related field. Any experience of working with the techniques mentioned in this ad is a serious plus.

Pay Range

Minimum $46,700.00, Midpoint $58,450.00, Maximum $70,200.00

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
