New York University

Description

NYU Shanghai is inviting applications for a full time tenured/tenure track research position at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor to expand and support our undergraduate major in Interactive Media and Business and our undergraduate minor in Creativity Innovation. We seek candidates who have completed a doctoral degree and whose research and scholarship lies at the intersection of emerging media, business innovation, and urban studies, especially within and across Global and/or Asian urban contexts.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose research focuses on urban, business, technological and/or social-impact innovation in, through, and with emerging media, digital, and urban economies. Our program and faculty are highly interdisciplinary and we encourage applications from scholars whose research is rooted in business, management, marketing, economics, digital innovation, social sciences, communication and media studies, infrastructure and transportation, informatics, data analytics, urban studies, and other pertinent fields. We especially welcome applicants whose expertise and research bridges traditional disciplinary roots and boundaries with a commitment to innovative research and engaged teaching, and to connecting our students with current research, problems, and practices beyond the classroom and around the world.

Background

The Interactive Media and Business (IMB) major is where innovation and business meet through emerging media technology. IMB teaches how innovative ideas combine with technology, creativity, and business principles to yield viable products, services, and experiences. Our project-based curriculum explores new models for creation, innovation, and entrepreneurship through the development of digital services, software and hardware, the manipulation of digital media, the design and fabrication of material objects, the construction of virtual and physical spaces and services, and engagement with broad communities. Our seminars encourage the study of the histories, philosophies, and practices of emerging media as they impact society in business contexts and as a whole. Students elect multiple emerging media arts, technology, and design foundation courses from our closely aligned Interactive Media Arts program, as well as core business courses from our Economics and Business programs. Additionally, our undergraduate students spend two semesters taking courses across NYU’s Global Network of 14 campus study away sites. Our major courses focus on developing skills within and across four “Ms”: mindsets, mapping, methods, and making.

Our program is currently served by 11 full-time faculty (seven of whom are clinical teaching faculty and four tenured/tenure track faculty), and five adjunct faculty members. Our IMB program currently has over 80 undergraduate majors and is growing, and our courses also serve a new academic minor in Creativity Innovation created in close partnership with the NYU Shanghai’s Program on Creativity Innovation.

Affiliation with the NYU Shanghai Key Laboratory of Urban Design and Urban Science (LOUD).

The successful hire will become a member of the NYU Shanghai Key Laboratory of Urban Design and Urban Science (LOUD). The Key Lab leverages the multidisciplinary strength of NYU Shanghai faculty in design and planning, urban science, geographic information science, urban ecology, urban geography, social science, environment science, and computer and data science to conduct cutting-edge research in computational urban science in planning. The lab is aiming to expand its research areas to include business and media innovation in the context of urban digital transformation, application of AI in urban sensing, and climate change, and the new hire will play an important role in this expanding reach.

Responsibilities

Faculty will be expected to lead a high-quality research agenda in the areas of interactive media business and urban studies leading to tenure (for a junior hire), and an international research profile for senior hires. Faculty will be expected to teach established and elective courses in interactive media and business, provide leadership in the development of the program’s core business courses, as well as to develop their own electives based on their unique background and interests. The teaching load is 3 courses per year. Current elective offerings include courses on creativity and innovation, user experience, game and creative learning design, rapid prototyping, communication for influence, entrepreneurship, life design, product design, and media and financial technologies. Faculty also participate in program and school-wide initiatives and committee work. A commitment to undergraduate education and enthusiastic dedication to the new IMB major are essential. The program is also looking to develop industry-facing certificate and graduate programs.

NYU Shanghai has a diverse and international student population. Strong consideration will be given to candidates who have worked in institutions with international student populations.

Terms of employment at NYU Shanghai are comparable to NYU New York and other U.S. institutions with respect to research start-up funds and compensation, and they include housing subsidies and educational subsidies for children. Faculty may in certain cases have the opportunity to spend time at NYU New York and other sites of the NYU Global Network, engaging in both research and teaching.
