SUMMARY

The Communications Manager is responsible for developing, writing, coordinating, and promoting institutional narratives and news to internal and external stakeholders, including staff and media. The ideal candidate is a creative storyteller with journalism, editorial, public relations or internal communications experience, and is a self-motivated, detail-oriented, and resourceful team player. This role works collaboratively across departments to help manage an institutional editorial calendar that supports strategic priorities and consistent messaging about the Exploratorium’s mission to transform science learning worldwide. This position reports to the Director of Communications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Public Relations:

  • Serve as first contact for incoming media inquiries, responding rapidly and accurately to questions, requests, and fact-checking queries
  • Write press releases and other media communications, coordinating with departments across the institution to obtain images and other supporting materials
  • Build media lists and manage outreach and campaign performance
  • Plan and manage logistics for media events such as press previews and exhibition openings, including scheduling and supporting interviews
  • Update and manage Press Office page on the Exploratorium’s website, including publishing press releases, “Recent News” articles, and institutional accolades
  • Develop and execute PR strategies under the direction of the Director of Communications

Internal Communications:

  • Develop, write, and edit content for internal communications
  • Build and maintain staff relationships across the institution to uncover and develop compelling stories that reflect the breadth and depth of work at the Exploratorium, from high-level science to public programming and global partnerships
  • In partnership with the Internal Communications team, leverage a range of communications channels (Wiki, newsletter, staff meetings, email lists, etc …); tailoring messaging to each channel to maximize engagement and effectiveness
  • Collaborate with Media Studios, Marketing, Membership, Social and Digital teams to develop and deliver institutional narratives with rich storytelling and visuals
  • Develop and execute Internal Communications strategies under the direction of the Director of Communications
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA with 5 years progressive experience in public relations, marketing, journalism or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear and compelling stories
  • Extensive demonstrable experience with CMS, Photoshop, Google Workspace; knowledge of Cision, Drupal and HTML a plus
  • Good organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills
  • Ability to work under deadlines and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Self-starter with a strong work ethic who takes initiative and can work independently
  • Ability to deal with the public and pressure in graceful manner
