Job Description

The Center for Social Concerns is an interdisciplinary community of faculty, staff, students and community members committed to human flourishing. For forty years the Center has responded to the complex demands of justice through an innovative mix of research for the common good, justice education and critical conversations.

We are seeking an experienced, creative, highly collaborative academic leader with a passion for the common good to join our dynamic team. As the senior member of staff, the Director of Strategy for the Center for Social Concerns will work closely with the executive director to set strategic direction and help lead the cultivation of strategic partnerships on and off campus.

Developing and Operationalizing Strategic Priorities

  • Oversee periodic strategic planning efforts with the Director faculty, staff and other stakeholders; ensure implementation of plans on an annual basis.
  • Lead the development of operating strategies for the Center’s portfolio to ensure expectations are met and consistent with the strategic vision and plan.
  • Ensure success of a project from idea to execution by remaining knowledgeable of upcoming projects, commitments and deliverables in order to anticipate needs, avert problems, and proactively identify tasks, work effort, and resources required
  • Support research and development by facilitating extramural funding, assisting the Director in fundraising activities, and ensuring grant development/management assistance for faculty-led initiatives
  • Supervise senior administrative staff including 2 associate directors (Associate Director for Finance and Administration and Associate Director for Advancement and Communications), 2 assistant directors (in justice education and critical conversations), a senior administrative assistant, and others as required.

Supporting Mission and Leadership

  • In collaboration with associate directors, oversee the general operations, staff and budget of the Center to ensure accuracy, coordination and effective allocation of resources
  • Ensure communication and information flow to and from the Director at all levels of the Center as well as with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic advice and insight to the Director regarding areas of risk, tactical challenges, and emerging opportunities for the Center.
  • Foster a values-driven culture in the Center by ensuring fair, inclusive practices, supporting the development of staff at all levels, and promoting community-building efforts amongst the staff, affiliated faculty, board members, and alumni.

Engaging Stakeholders

  • Facilitate engagement and relationships with the Schools, other ND units, benefactors and community organizations with political and organizational savvy to support the Director and the Center’s strategic priorities as needed;
  • Serve as a liaison with faculty, collaborators, administrators and other key constituencies in and outside the university to effectively communicate the priorities, goals and achievements of the center; assist in relationship building with faculty, donors, alumni, and other community stakeholders.
  • This is not a faculty track position and will not lead to appointment or opportunities to teach.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree
  • 5-7+ years of academic (Higher Education) leadership experience (multiple institutions preferred)
  • Experience with a variety of operational processes including: Change Management, Grant writing, communications, Community engagement, research, and program development
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Experience leading diverse teams of both faculty and staff
