We are seeking a Climate Resiliency Engineer / Designer to join our growing engineering, architecture, and planning group in Massachusetts and Connecticut. The ideal candidate will thrive as a vital part of a resourceful and collaborative water/climate resilience team. Our climate resiliency team has been an industry leader in New England over the past decade in vulnerability assessment and climate adaptation planning. This position will help lead, inspire, and support our growing climate resilience practice across multiple geographies, but primarily based in Southern New EnglandOur resilience planning practice is a highly integrated group of professionals performing policy analysis, technical assessment, planning, design and construction and community outreach and engagement. Related areas of technical focus for this position include but are not limited to: climate adaptation and resiliency, vulnerability and risk assessment, hazard mitigation, social vulnerability and equity, and community resilience planning and engagement.

Candidates may choose to sit in our Boston, Westborough, or Springfield, Massachusetts or Rocky Hill, Connecticut Offices. Remote working is an option, however, this role is also intended to provide critical leadership and mentoring to our team of professionals, and opportunities for in-office engagement are preferred. Our Water Team (including our climate resilience practice) includes over 60 local engineers, planners and scientists as well a larger national community of practice. Our team takes a collaborative approach to project delivery, business development, and operational success that includes opportunity for professional development and career growth. Our cross-disciplinary solutions depend upon robust engagement of practitioners across a variety of areas of expertise; it is this appreciation of big-picture vision in a context of practical project execution that allows us to arrive at 'right solutions.' The role is intended to be interdisciplinary and assignments may be generated through any of our many practice areas. 

Role

The desired candidate's primary day-to-day role will assist Kleinfelder's technical planning and design staff with the implementation of adaptation and resiliency strategies for climate-related hazards, including (but not limited to): coastal and inland flooding, sea level rise and storm surge, and extreme heat. Such strategies include (among others): deployable and permanent flood barriers (e.g., sea walls, bulkheads, berms), structure floodproofing, urban infrastructure retrofits, stormwater control measures/best management practices, green infrastructure, living shorelines, and other nature-based solutions. 

Desired Qualifications & Skills

This position requires a candidate with strong technical expertise, design-oriented background, and excellent organizational, communication and technical writing skills. Candidates with a Professional Engineer (PE), EI/EIT, or RLA/RA certification are strongly preferred, and the ideal candidate will be fully capable of providing technical leadership and direction to project teams and mentoring of staff.

Specifically, it is required that this Climate Resiliency Engineer / Designer candidate will:

  • Possess a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in civil or environmental engineering, coastal or structural engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, and/or urban design and climate resilience;
  • Work diligently and effectively within a team environment, collaborating with staff from different disciplines and technical backgrounds;
  • Have prior experience working on flood mitigation design projects, including projects incorporating Base and Design Flood Elevations that factor future sea level rise and storm surge impacts;
  • Have experience with the following technical programs: AutoCAD/Civil 3D, GIS (ESRI ArcPro or ArcMap), and Microsoft Suite.

Additionally, a candidate with one - or a combination of - the following skillsets and/or prior experience is strongly preferred

  • Experience utilizing hydrologic and hydraulic modeling programs, including PCSWMM or EPA SWMM, HydroCAD, HEC-HMS, and/or HEC-RAS;
  • Experience designing coastal/marine structures, determining and incorporating static and dynamic flood and wave loadings; 
  • Experience with one or more of the following is a plus: hazard mitigation planning, FEMA NFIP Community Rating System, and emergency operations planning;
  • Have working knowledge or past experience with state-level climate adaptation and resiliency programs, or experience with relevant FEMA pre-disaster and flood mitigation programs (FEMA BRIC, HMA/FMA); 
  • Experience coordinating and leading community outreach and engagement activities;
  • Past project or research experience with Affordable Housing projects, CDBG program, Historic/Cultural Resources or Community Preservation Act projects is a plus.
