You'll work with multidisciplinary scientific teams from a diverse set of backgrounds and a world-class academic mentor specifically aligned to your project. Our postdocs are respected as specialists, encouraged to speak up, and supported to share their research at conferences, publish papers, achieve their goals.

Make a more meaningful impact in your career, with greater ownership and accountability to make a contribution whilst making a difference to the lives of our patients!

This is a 3-year programme, with an initial 2-year period and a 1-year merit-based extension.

About the Opportunity

This is a fantastic opportunity to conduct a research project examining the physiological role of an intriguing hepatokine, Inhibin-E/Activin E and how it mediates crosstalk between liver and adipose tissue at the molecular level. The successful Postdoc will join AstraZeneca’s department of Metabolism Bioscience within our Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) therapy area, where the mission is to develop innovative medicines to treat metabolic disorders, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, NASH, CKD and CVD, using ground-breaking technologies.

Project Focus

This project will conduct pioneering research in the development of new drugs on our vibrant R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden. Our Postdoc will collaborate with experienced AstraZeneca interdisciplinary scientists with diverse set backgrounds, and an extraordinary academic mentor specifically aligned to the project.

Key objectives include:

  • Deciphering the receptor signal transduction pathway(s) that Inhibin-E/Activin E utilizes in both human preadipocytes and mature adipocytes using state-of-the art biochemical and molecular biology methodologies and in vitro cell models
  • Then, examining the role of Inhibin-E/Activin E for the crosstalk between hepatocyte and adipocytes using co-culture human microphysiological liver spheroid and adipocyte systems.
  • Leading to profiling the in vivo functional role of Inhibin-E/Activin E on various adipose tissue depots and function using transgenic models.

This is supported by Mohammad Bohlooly (Senior Director, head of translational genomic, Discovery Sciences, AstraZeneca) and Jan Borén (Professor and Head of the Institute of Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg, and Physician at the Department of Clinical Chemistry at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital) from who, you'll also receive additional scientific mentorship.

What You’ll Do

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Taking the lead on the project for examining specific receptor(s) that Inhibin-E/Activin E is acting through and then defining the downstream signal transduction pathway using ex vivo models such as human adipocytes and human liver spheroid
  • Designing and conducting in vivo metabolic profiling of mouse models with selected gene ablation of Inhibin-E/Activin E signaling elements to better understand the mechanism and phenotypic physiologically-relevant consequences
  • Publishing results in credible high quality/high impact scientific journals and present your findings at renown international scientific meetings
  • Working in close collaboration with multiple disciplinary departments within AstraZeneca to expand your scientific experience and expertise
  • Build your professional experience and network to accelerate your future scientific career

Qualification, Skills & Experience

Essential Requirements

  • PhD in Biomedical Sciences or similar is an essential requirement
  • Broad understanding of whole-body energy metabolism
  • Experience with integrative 'omics analysis (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics)
  • Strong collaborator with excellent communication skill, including oral and written presentation skills
  • Agile and willingness to adapt to the changes of external environment.

Desirable Requirements

  • Additional experience in cell biology and molecular biology
  • Experience with culturing adipocyte or hepatocyte

Why AstraZeneca

The unique positioning of this postdoc within a pharmaceutical company such as AZ, means that you will be able to access large datasets which are not available in the public domain. Moreover, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that methods and techniques you develop will not only be published but will also be used within AZ after the postdoc position concludes, in real-life projects - and that ultimately the work you do will directly impact patients’ lives!

As a key member of a research group and taking a leading role on a Postdoctoral project, we expect regular attendance - a minimum of 3 days per week on the AstraZeneca campus. For laboratory-based scientists, this may be higher.

Given the unique positioning of our Postdoctoral researchers, you may have an additional opportunity to spend some time with an external academic mentor. In this instance, you may be required to spend some of your time working alongside them at their facility as driven by the research project. Your flexibility to meet the needs of the research and the scope of the project is required, and we also look to support you with flexibility in accordance with our standard work policies.
