The Office of Research’s Research Platforms & Insights (RPI) unit is responsible for identifying and implementing solutions that can improve process effectiveness and prepare the Office of Research and UC research enterprise for future growth. 

Job Overview

The Manager Strategic Data Analytics position will oversee the insights team, the processes within the Office of Research RPI unit, and collaborate with leadership to facilitate effective, data-informed decision-making by employing diverse statistical analysis methods, including explanatory and predictive monitoring techniques. 

Essential Functions

  • Lead cross-functional projects using advanced data modeling and analysis to discover insights that will guide strategic decisions and uncover optimization opportunities.
  • Communicate and present results and business impacts of insight initiatives to stakeholders within college/unit and the University.
  • Create and maintain dashboards in Tableau and Power BI. 
  • Develop and maintain data models, automation systems, dashboards, reports and metrics that support key business decisions.
  • Design and implement technical processes to address business issues (data collection, validation, modeling, etc.).
  • Oversee the design and delivery of reports and insights that analyze business functions and key operations and performance metrics.
  • Oversee the data/report requests process: tracking requests submitted, prioritization, approval, etc.
  • Develop and implement quality controls and departmental standards to ensure quality standards, organizational expectations, and regulatory requirements.
  • Anticipate future demands of initiatives related to people, technology, budget and business within the department and design/implement solutions to meet these needs.
  • May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Required Education

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Analytics, or related field

Nine (9) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement

Required Experience

Five (5) years of experience in data analytics (can include co-op, internship, etc.), including two (2) years of personnel management experience

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Working knowledge of data mining principles: predictive analytics, mapping, collecting data from multiple data systems on premises and cloud-based data sources.
  • Experience working with development teams to design, build, maintain and migrate optimal data pipelines and data models using cloud technologies (Azure/AWS/Google).
  • Ability to perform effective querying involving multiple tables and subqueries (SQL, Python, R, etc.).
  • Understanding of and experience using analytical concepts and statistical techniques: hypothesis development, designing tests/experiments, analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and developing actionable recommendations for leadership.
  • Experience and knowledge of statistics and statistical packages for analyzing large data sets (Excel, SPSS, SAS etc).
  • Experience creating dashboards and effectively visualizing data using relevant data to inform decisions (Tableau, PowerBI, SAS, etc.).
  • Strong problem solving, quantitative and analytical abilities.
  • Strong ability to plan and manage numerous processes, people and projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration and delegation skills.
