Job Description

The Raclin Murphy Museum of Art strives to create positions for university students to work closely with specific Museum departments while allowing moments for broad learning of museum practice.

This position will work with the Visitor Services desk to assist as the first impression of the Museum by welcoming all Museum visitors, dispensing appropriate materials to aid with their needs, offering an overview of the Museum as well as connecting them with relevant programming for the day.

This position will also work with the Education Department to welcome visitors of all ages and backgrounds to the Museum through tours, events, and programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Visitor Services:
  • Engaging and welcoming all visitors with dignity and respect. Support, create and promote an environment of hospitality and belonging with the welcoming of each visitor
  • Staffing the welcome desk during public hours (Tuesday/Sunday). Ensure adequate supply of materials at the desk. Replenish as needed
  • Assist guests with parking procedures
  • Answer guests’ general information inquiries in person or via telephone as needed
  • Offer guidance and suggestions to visitors on Museum collections and exhibitions, uphold Museum policies and procedures, understand and implement safety measures in accordance with Notre Dame policies
  • Assisting with events and programs:
  • Assist with specific Thursday evening and Saturday programs for various audiences, including kids, families, and adults. (Programs are variable by week. This position will not have to work every Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon)
  • Support and promote a culture of hospitality, creativity, and belonging in the Museum
  • Work in a collaborative environment alongside members of the Museum’s Education Department to shape authentic experiences with original works of art
  • Touring:
  • Lead regularly scheduled tours of the Museum for visitors and private groups on Thursdays and Sundays
  • Develop a cohesive narrative of the Museum to lead visitors through works of art and architectural spaces
  • Engage with visitors of all ages and backgrounds to make the Museum a welcoming and comfortable space for all

  • Familiarity with and experience implementing contemporary museum education pedagogies
  • Deep understanding of select works of art in the Raclin Murphy Museum’s collection

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest in museums, art, teaching, and/or hands-on creative experiences (although no knowledge of art or art history is assumed)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, timely with correspondence, and confident with public speaking
  • Availability on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and weekends. Tentative schedule (subject to change): Tuesdays from 10:00–5:00 p.m.; Thursdays from 1:00–5:00 p.m. (once or twice a month until 7:30 p.m.); Saturday afternoons when specific programs are scheduled; Sunday from noon–5:00 p.m.
  • Demonstrated interest in hospitality, museums, and customer service. Familiarity with accessibility services and procedures.
