Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage all aspects of the GNC teams work. 
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the GNC subsystem both internally and with external partners. 
  • Collaborate with other colleagues, partners and suppliers to ensure an integrated approach to the lunar lander's development. 
  • Lead the GNC teams to successfully execute the work needed to design, build and operate the APEX 1.0 lander. 
  • Manage the GNC teams tasking, schedule, budget and progress.
  • Develop and optimize the GNC system to ensure it meets mission requirements. 
  • Conduct simulation and analysis to validate GNC system performance.
  • Make and communicate decisions related to their subsystem. 
  • Oversee the integration of GNC systems with other vehicle systems.
  • Coordinate with other Leads when decisions affect multiple subsystems. 
  • Develop algorithms for guidance, navigation, and control.
  • Engage with external partners, suppliers, and vendors as necessary to ensure subsystem specifications are met. 
  • Provide inputs for the Integrated Master Schedule (IMS), budget considerations, trade studies, vendor selections, and other relevant areas. 
  • Participate in weekly meetings, providing updates and feedback on their subsystem's progress. 
  • Mentor and guide team members within their subsystem, ensuring quality and timely completion of tasks. 
  • Input into the system level technical budgets, processes and procedures. 
  • Own the subsystems project plan, tasking and day to day operations. 
  • Proactively identify and manage risks within the subsystem, creating risk mitigation strategies.
  • Encourage a culture of continuous improvement to enhance subsystem design and processes.
  • Ensure subsystem development adheres to international space standards, regulations, and safety protocols.
  • Stay informed of the latest industry trends to maintain and grow technical expertise within the subsystem area.
  • Engage with key stakeholders to communicate the status, progress, and achievements of the subsystem.
  • Maintain documentation for design, development, testing, and operational procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Create and implement training programs for team members to develop necessary skills for subsystem work.
  • Manage the efficient allocation and utilization of resources, including team members, equipment, and materials.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills/Experience

  • 10+ years working on GNC for aerospace systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (mandatory Aerospace focus), Electrical Engineering, or Robotics Engineering.
  • Relevant work experience and/or substantial coursework in spacecraft GNC.
  • Ability to perform spacecraft GNC design and analysis tasks, and support mission operations.
  • Working knowledge of interplanetary mission design.
  • Working knowledge of spacecraft guidance and control needs during orbital and/or entry, descent and landing.
  • Strong experience in 6DOF simulations of spacecraft.
  • Strong experience with simulation and programming tools (ex. Matlab/Simulink, C++, Python).
  • Familiarity with GNC hardware sensor suites and actuators for spacecraft applications.
  • Experience with contingency planning and spacecraft FDIR.
  • Working knowledge of Kalman Filters.
  • Working knowledge of non-linear system modeling.
  • Experience working in group settings with colleagues from different engineering disciplines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
  • Self-motivated learner.

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Advanced degree in Applied Math, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (mandatory Aerospace focus), Electrical Engineering, or Robotics Engineering.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in spacecraft GNC systems outside of LEO.
  • Ability to solve complex problems in a fast-paced collaborative interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Extensive experience with C++ and Python programming languages
  • Extensive experience with NAIF SPICE
  • Extensive experience with STK/STK Scheduler/ODTK/SOLIS
  • Monte Carlo analysis and Stochastic Optimization
  • Knowledge of Convex Optimization
  • Experience in relative navigation, image processing, and feature detection techniques
  • Experience with linear and non-linear control system design and implementation
  • Experience with robust controller design techniques including, but not limited to, LQR/LQG, H∞, and SMC.
  • Knowledge of State-space control design techniques
  • Design and analysis of controllers using classical control system design (frequency and s-domain) and modern approaches.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced design and development environment.
  • Schedule flexibility may be required depending on program development needs.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.
