What is the Role?

Operational performance is the cornerstone in ensuring safety and excellence with the aim of providing outstanding customer service to our students, families, and community. Coney Island Prep’s next Chief Operating Officer (COO) will work closely with the CEO to manage the day-to-day operations of four campuses and one network office of our charter school. The COO will coach and manage a team of network and school-based Directors who strengthen and support an operational culture that facilitates exceptional academic outcomes for our scholars and teachers. 

The COO champions our school’s expectations and belief that all of our scholars, families, and staff deserve schools that are safe, joyful, beautiful, efficient, and offer a first-class experience. Their vision is rooted in deeply held values of equity, especially for our predominantly low-income, first-generation college-going student of color population. 

The COO reports directly to the CEO, and will join the network leadership team. 

What You’ll Be Asked To Do

Operate with Effectiveness by leading with a systems orientation to drive long term sustainable results that meet our schools vision and mission.

  • Codify systems to ensure best practices are implemented across schools, with a particular emphasis on operational systems that predictably and sustainably deliver a first class experience for scholars, families and staff
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensure SOPs are continuously updated
  • Model leadership and execute systems that champion the organization’s vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in all aspects of daily operations
  • Serve as the organization’s chief safety agent
  • Liaise with school leaders, families, CEO, and other key external stakeholders such as the NYC Department of Education to actively manage risk and crises related to student safety
  • Ensure compliance in all aspects of day to day operations, including but not limited to local and state reporting, student and staff technology, data privacy, cybersecurity, facilities and fixed assets management, student registration, immunizations, and child nutrition
  • Partner closely with the Chief Financial Officer to execute the organization’s Fiscal Policies and Procedures Manual and effectively manage the organization’s financial resources

Deliver exceptional results by setting and driving the school’s vision for operational systems and collaboration that consistently leads to safe, clean, beautiful, welcoming, efficient and deliberate schools that support great teaching and learning.

  • Serve as a thought partner and strategist alongside the CEO by constantly evaluating decisions with an eye on both immediate term impact and long-term priorities
  • Employ a research-based, data-driven approach to decision-making, outcomes management, and leadership coaching
  • Marshalls all resources, especially leaders and staff, to meet ambitious goals and outcomes related to efficient IT systems, exceptional facilities, and excellent student services
  • Elevate the voices of our most important stakeholders - children and families - to build a school that centers community in its operations

Collaborate and co-lead by working in partnership with the Chief Schools Officer to lead all aspects of the day-to-day management and operations of our schools, including ensuring that the operational performance of our campuses is responsive to the academic and cultural needs of the school.

  • Partners with the Chief Academic Officer to ensure operational systems support the fidelity and implementation of academic systems and curriculum, including data, attendance, and student information systems
  • Partner with the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Talent & Equity Officer to support all compliance, financial, academic data, and performance management systems
  • Build trust-based relationships and navigate across organizational layers to achieve challenging goals through the management of both school-based leaders and other network level team members

Develop talent by directly managing and coaching a team of four (4) Directors of Operations, the Director of IT, Director Compliance and Student Services, and Director of Facilities to support schools.

  • Design and deliver ongoing professional development for all operational directors and their campus-based teams
  • Foster a collaborative approach between all operational and non-teaching staff to ensure campus and network alignment as one school
  • Lead a diverse, equitable, and inclusive team by both modeling organizational values and modeling strengths-based coaching that catalyzes leader performance

What You’ll Need

  • Passion for education and a dedication to Coney Island Prep’s mission; steadfast belief that all scholars can achieve at the highest academic levels and deserve an opportunity to succeed in the college and career of their choice 
  • Adept at organizing complex deliverables and tasks for multiple stakeholders 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced Excel skills, including facility with writing complex formulas
  • Self-reflective and open to frequent feedback, with the ambition and desire to grow and develop
  • A positive, solutions-oriented attitude and drive for excellence
  • Team-first collaborator and communicator
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and the ability to coach others to do the same
  • Background in facilitating and implementing DEIJ discussions and practices
  • Bachelor’s degree required; minimum ten years of professional experience and at least five years K-12 school leadership experience a must; advanced professional degree preferred

Coney Island Prep is a college preparatory public charter school in Brooklyn, New York. Merging growth, performance, and commitment, the Coney Island Prep community takes its responsibility to prepare scholars for the college and career of their choice very seriously, but not ourselves. We balance our sense of ownership and responsibility with humility and levity and support each other every step of the way. Coney Island Prep currently serves over 1,300 scholars across its four schools, including:

  • 312 scholars in kindergarten – second grade at the lower elementary school
  • 336 scholars in third – fifth grade at the upper elementary school
  • 320 scholars in sixth – eighth grades at the middle school
  • 350 scholars in ninth-twelfth grade at the high school

Benefits and Compensation

  • Employees at Coney Island Prep are provided with salaries that are highly competitive, set through a lens of equity, and based on an individual’s skills and experiences relevant to the role. The starting salary for this role is $190,000.
