Job summary

DEFRA is the UK government department responsible for safeguarding our natural environment, supporting our world-leading food and farming industry, and sustaining a thriving rural economy. Our broad remit means we play a major role in people's day-to-day life, from the food we eat, and the air we breathe, to the water we drink.

  • DEFRA Group Finance now has available two Management Insights roles in the Management Insights Team. This team sits in BIMAS (Business Intelligence, Management Accounting and Systems) which provides BI (Business Intelligence) systems and services across Defra. These roles are part of a team providing a management insight service to the Environment Agency and across Defra.
  • This team provides business critical self-service dashboards and products using modern BI tools across a variety of data sets such as people, money, time recording, key performance indicators and much more.
  • We are a small team which supports over 2,500 customers and has been recognised for driving innovation, having recently won the 2022 Government Finance Function Business Innovation Award.
  • This role involves leading on the development, designing and creation of Management Insights (reporting products and self-service dashboards) using modern BI tools. Working closely with partners and customers to develop products that will meet their needs. Taking responsibility as an expert and sharing knowledge across the team. Working in an agile way promoting and deploying these products by providing training and guidance as part of our innovative, modern and interactive service to our customers.

Job description

Key responsibilities will include but not be limited to: -

  • Lead on the development, design and creation of MI (reporting products and self-service dashboards) using modern BI tools such as Qlik. Working in an agile manner, with the aim of providing a modern and interactive reporting service to our customers.
  • Promote the work of the team across the Environment Agency (EA) and Defra to help drive innovative ways of working.
  • Communicate using appropriate styles, methods and timing, including digital channels, to maximise understanding and impact.
  • Ensure all data sets are fit for purpose. Ensure the secure and careful use of all government and public data and information within the MI service. 
  • Continually improve both products and process so they add value, are harmonised and are easier to use. Ensure both products and process are improved to meet customer needs. 
  • Be alert to emerging issues and trends across Defra and Government that might impact or benefit the MI service and/or the team’s work.

Person specification

Essential Experience and Skills:- 

  • Excellent analytical, data management and presentation skills to provide high quality insights to managers.
  • Communicates well, both orally and in writing in an honest and engaging manner with all stakeholders and is able to provide clear and understandable products to non-technical managers.
  • Proven track record of delivering to time and quality.
  • Proven track record of handling large data sets.
  • Proven track record of presenting data in visual/meaningful ways to support business decision making. 

Technical Skills 

  • These roles require digital skills such as proficiency with Microsoft Office products, specifically a good background in using Microsoft Excel is necessary.

Qualifications 

  • Qualified by experience.

Blended Working

Defra operates a blended working policy subject to business need, giving people the flexibility to choose when and where they work and collaborate with others.

Individuals are expected to work from one of the office locations stated in the advert to connect with their colleagues, as required by their role and business team needs. There is flexibility to split the working week, spending minimum of 40-60% in the workplace, unless exceptional circumstances apply and/or you are a contractual home worker.
