Job Description

The NREL Commercial Building Controls and Analytics Group (CBCAG) uses engineering, applied science, and software engineering expertise to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in the U.S. commercial building stock. We are expanding the frontier of scientific knowledge that enables optimized energy use, generation, and storage in the built environment at multiple scales with equitable outcomes designed into our research. Our research significantly enhances the resiliency, efficiency, and affordability of energy systems across the United States and the world.

CBCAG data scientists and software engineers work in close collaboration with mechanical and electrical engineers, architects, policy makers, community program implementers, and building operators. This position will work primarily on the Building Performance Standards Technical Assistance team. Projects include supporting jurisdictions to merge complex building datasets into web-based NREL platforms, using Python and Jupiter notebooks to upload building data onto SEED Platform, presenting data and analyses to jurisdictions/clients, and performing analyses on SEED Platform and connecting platforms for jurisdictions based on technical assistance requests.

The successful applicant will be an innovative problem solver, work collaboratively to identify, design, implement, and test new analyses. They will be comfortable working in an interdisciplinary environment and successfully communicate technical building analyses to a variety of client audiences. Applicants will need to be proactive, self-motivated, and demonstrate strong self-management skills.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant PhD. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience.

  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Experience in analysis of complex datasets.
  • Customer/client facing relationship management experience.
  • Expertise with data analysis, scripting workflows, and API infrastructure in a collaborative environment.
  • Expertise using Python and JavaScript including Django, Angular, or Jupiter Notebooks.
  • Some knowledge of the energy policy landscape and policy actors in United States.
  • Experience writing technical reports and generating compelling visualizations based on research results.
  • Experience documenting methodology of analyses for knowledge transfer.
  • Capacity to learn new programming languages and technology frameworks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A familiarity with building performance standards.
  • Working knowledge of building science principles and building energy reporting terminology.
  • Visualization and GIS experience specifically focused on integrating complex and sparse datasets.
  • Experience working with local, state, or federal energy programs, initiatives, or offices.
  • Experience with software development in multiple scientific, engineering, and research environments.
  • Experience presenting technical analyses to non-technical audiences.
  • Experience writing papers, performing literature reviews, and in liberal arts-oriented settings.
  • Working knowledge of common 3rd party analysis tools, data repositories, and frameworks (ex: Salesforce, ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, Pandas, TimescaleDB).
  • In-depth understanding of the energy-related challenges and opportunities inherent in metering, managing, and storing building data.
  • Able to understand and connect technical data analyses with practical policy solutions for communities resulting in actionable outcomes.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $77,600 - $139,700

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
