A staff position is available within the NREL Materials Science Center, which will support equipment in the experimental Materials Discovery and Design team. This team has several high-vacuum thin film synthesis tools such as sputtering, pulsed laser deposition, and molecular beam epitaxy chambers, some of which utilize hazardous precursor gases, as well as both custom and turn-key materials characterization instruments. The position would primarily involve stewardship of existing laboratory equipment as well as designing new, custom equipment. The support engineer will also ensure that a continuity of engineering knowledge and best practices is maintained in an environment with a broad and often changing base of equipment users. The person hired into this position will be responsible for coordinating routine maintenance tasks, interacting with vendors, performing baseline experiments, writing safe/standard operation procedures, troubleshooting, and championing laboratory safety, stocking levels, and cleanliness.
The hired candidate will have technical credentials at BS-level or higher and a demonstrated ability and continuing interest to provide hands-on support to users of complex laboratory equipment. They will already have demonstrable experience in vacuum systems and materials deposition. The successful candidate will have impeccable organization and technical documentation skills in addition to their hands-on laboratory skills. In addition, self-motivation and positive work attitude are desirable criteria. This is a limited-term position for 1 year, with the potential for extension and/or conversion to a permanent position, based on upon mutual satisfaction and availability of funds.

Relevant Master's Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience . General knowledge and application of scientific technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Beginning experience in project management. Good technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
