Job Description

The Plant Engineering & Maintenance - Mechanical Engineer (HVAC & Utilities) is responsible for defining, developing, and managing methods and processes for engineering systems, components, equipment for central utilities and operations. This individual acquires and analyzes data to update and manage changes and make recommendations for improvement. The position serves a key role in conducting field survey and data collection/analysis, determining, and implementing solutions.

General Summary: 

This position entails working with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, maintenance technicians, plant operators, and quality personnel for the development and implementation of Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC), Controlled Temperature Units (CTU) and associated central utilities systems, serving production manufacturing and laboratory areas. The successful candidate will develop concepts, design in accordance with unique industry specifications and standards, perform testing, oversee field installation, provide operator training, and turn over systems to facility maintenance. The Mechanical Engineer (HVAC & Utilities) will lead the execution of projects. Primary responsibilities include developing scopes of work, user requirements, project plans, budgets, and cost controls. The successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to take on non-traditional tasks, roles, responsibilities, and challenges and a hands-on and can-do attitude in a lead role, responsible for developing solutions to design challenges. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Be responsible for site facilities engineering in a major manufacturing plant, including management/coordination of external engineering resources, (contractors and suppliers) preparation of bid packages, design reviews, project management and compliance with local/state/federal codes and regulations. 
  • Lead and support site projects in Plant Engineering & Maintenance. Tasks include support and monitoring of equipment performance, propose and develop equipment and facility improvements. 
  • Lead and/or support site projects and/or participate on project teams including business case development and investment justification. Tasks include proposing and developing equipment facility improvements. 
  • Regularly attend project meetings and review utility related projects; put into a schedule with deliverables; physically monitor projects and report status (e.g. spend to date and current forecast). 
  • Perform analyses of energy use and recommend energy saving improvement to align with our sustainability long term plan. 
  • Partner with our financial support team to develop budgets, provide updates and manage actual spending. 
  • Perform design analysis, generate equipment layouts, develop P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Drawing) drawings, and engineer/design parts, components, and assemblies to meet environmental and operating requirements of assigned projects. 
  • Develop and support testing of equipment, support components and fixturing requirements. Draft procedures for commissioning acceptance testing of systems. 
  • Supporting/Developing Management of Change (MOC) review process. 
  • Collaboratively and collegially work within a team of engineers and area owners to advance the project's goals within schedule and cost constraints. 
  • Developing project specifications, scheduling equipment for the project and providing load calculations and energy analysis. 
  • Complies with all applicable codes, regulations, governmental agency, and company directives related to systems operations and work safety. 
  • Developing Preventative Maintenance plans, selecting spare parts for equipment and specifying asset replacement requirements. 

Position Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor of Science or Engineering or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence, with a desired 2 years of a related field. 

Required Experience & Skills 

  • Experience with technical problem-solving methodologies and continuous improvement 
  • Time Management – ability to handle and prioritize a large number of simultaneous assignments 
  • Attention to detail and deadlines, flexibility to adapt to changing work assignments 
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ethics 
  • Computer skills using MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point etc.) 
  • Experience creating, documenting, and adhering to Business Procedures / Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) 

Preferred Experience and Skills: 

  • Project Management Insitute PMP certification or equivalent 
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license / Engineer in Training (FE) certification 
  • Financial Acumen - SAP 
  • AutoCAD / Revit / Bluebeam 
  • HVAC load analyses – Hourly Analysis Program (HAP) 
  • Building Automation Systems (Siemens Apogee/Desigo)
