IT Directors identify trends and developments in information technology, assess related impact upon business operations, and recommend implementation of technology or services that support the strategic direction of the University. They lead and develop managers, supervisors and/or staff.

The University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development (EHD) seeks an experienced and capable professional to serve as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The CTO will provide leadership and management to the Educational Technologies Office (ETO) to deliver exceptional educational technologies support to academic departments, centers and units across EHD.

Salary range 145-155k

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean and Chief Operating Officer, through leadership of the internal ETO team and in collaboration with UVA’s central Information Technology Services (ITS) team and other schools across the university, the CTO will be expected to: 

  • Ensure EHD ETO supports the school’s mission and initiatives. 
  • Provide strategic/operational direction for IT resources to serve the needs of the Dean, Department Chairs, faculty, staff, and student population. 
  • Manage alignment with ITS and Research Computing. 

In addition, the selected candidate will: 

  • Prepare recommendations for the University’s senior leadership regarding long-term information technology needs, strategies, equipment, and application requirements for optimal performance. 
  • Stay abreast of current and emerging technology trends and best practices related to education and research. 
  • Serve as a strategic partner to school leadership, providing insights and recommendations on leveraging technology to enhance all aspects of the school’s mission. 
  • Advise faculty and staff and provide oversight on matters of data storage and information security. 
  • Develop a high performing, self-motivated ETO team that generates innovative solutions to problems.  
  • Clearly communicate priorities and expectations to staff while conveying an atmosphere of support, cooperation, confidence, and self-advocacy. 
  • Develop or refine ETO's policies and processes to create efficiencies and align with school and University policies to support the school’s mission. 
  • Prepare and administer the ETO budget, approve expenditures, and ensure adherence to proper accounting practices. 
  • Utilize Business Intelligence strategies to review, evaluate and recommend IT projects based upon feasibility assessments, cost/benefit calculations, risk factors or situations. 
  • Manage the complete lifecycle of enterprise data and analytics projects, including planning, design, infrastructure, implementation, release management, maintenance, support, and stabilization. 
  • Identify and advocate for new technology to advance the capacity for mission-focused data analytics across the school. 
  • Create and advise on the design of data models, ETL tools, visualizations, analytics, and business intelligence strategies necessary to meet the school’s wide range of reporting needs. 
  • Present proposals for technology equipment/services/risk prevention that support EHD’s strategic direction, short and/or long-range initiatives and priorities. 
  • Oversee the allocation of centrally provisioned technology resources and services and assist EHD’s semi-autonomous units in the purchase of unit-funded technology and services. 
  • Provide leadership and guidance to team and colleagues in the planning, designing, development and implementation of technology projects.  
  • Authorize and oversee the implementation efforts of new technology and/or communications equipment or services. 
  • Develop relationships with technology professionals in peer institutions / organizations to exchange information and ideas. 
  • Identify and facilitate strategic partnerships between the school’s IT function and various groups within the University with a focus on ensuring quality, consistency, stable utilization, and access to the IT resources across the University. 
  • Contribute to the development of institution wide information technology policies, procedures or processes and subsequent implementation. 
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned. 

This position may be considered for hybrid work. Minimum Requirements 

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree Required. Equivalent combination of experience, education and/or certifications may be substituted in lieu of degree. 
  • Experience: Ten years of related experience is required with at least five years of IT or BI management. 
  • Substantive experience working with large, complex, and diverse data sets from multiple sources and in multiple formats. 
  • A proven track-record of delivering reporting solutions that meet the needs of a variety of stakeholders. 
  • Outstanding project management experience, including the demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects to completion and produce exceptional results. 
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, matrixed environment, exercising influence and achieving results. 
  • Capacity to build relationships of trust with diverse stakeholders (including senior leadership, faculty and staff, and ETO team members) and work effectively with them. 
  • A high level of individual initiative and drive, balanced by an ability to take direction from others and add value to projects originating with others. 
  • Strong skills working with spreadsheets, presentation software, visual analytics tools, and ETL tools. 
  • A commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. 

Preferred Experience 

  • Higher education experience strongly preferred. 
  • Master's degree preferred.
